Subject: Locker Room Etiquette: to lock or not to lock

I never bring a lock to the gym.  I travel all over the country for work and visit many YMCA's and community centers and still I don't use a lock.  It seems like the locker rooms are usually pretty empty.  I never have anything of value with me.  I guess I just don't see the point.

Is it inappropriate?  Should I always be locking my stuff?  What do you do?

Lock.  Always.

Although I have had stuff stolen from a locked locker.

I always lock not matter what.  If I forget my lock for some weird reason I carry my bag with me.  Maybe because I always have my car keys, wallet, and cell phone with me.

Lock.  Just out of habit.  And I HAVE had stuff stolen (even WITH the lock).  They busted it.

Think of it as cheap insurance.  It takes no effort, and saves you from the basic pain in the arse/mental aggrivation if things got stolen.

It has nothing to do with ettiquette. It has everything to do with keeping your stuff from being stolen, which I have had several times.

I don't know what your YMCA is like, but if it's anything like the ones around here, I wouldn't dream of leaving my stuff behind without it being locked up.

I always lock, but not because of anyone else's concerns. I lock because I have my car keys in my pocket (at a minimum), and most often my watch, wallet, and cell phone. All a crook has to do is walk through the parking lot hitting your key FOB until the lights flash and she has your car.

I don't think its a violation of gym ettiquette not to lock...it's just asking for your stuff to be stolen or messed with.

I dont' think the people that are going through lockers in lockers rooms looking for stuff to steal are that worried about etiquette,,, but that might just be my jaded opinion... when i forget my lock, I'll change, repack my bag and walk it out to my car and just keep my keys with me..

Ha!  The few times I forgot my lock, I would lay a pair of sweaty underware on top of everything.  If they wanted to dig through my pockets, they needed to get through the magical barrier of sweaty undies...

Even if you aren't concerned about possible theft, it helps folks quickly identify which lockers are available.  I know the staff at my YMCA frequently close all unused lockers so I often have to go through the annoying process of opening and closing locker after locker in my attempt to find a free one.

I always lock my stuff in the gym locker room. During morning swims, the crowd is pretty good, and a lot of people leave their lockers open, bags on the benches (with keys and wallet visible, etc.), etc. I just feel better knowing my keys and ID are locked up. If I am ever at the pool in the afternoon/evening or a weekend, I will definitely lock my stuff up and leave if I happen to forget my lock. I belong to a community center to which thousands of families in my town belong. After school, a lot of kids go there to hang out (open courts, rock climbing wall, pool, water slide, teen center, TV, video games, pool tables, etc.). Over the years, there have been a few occasions of theft occuring during these hours, or people (probably the teens, but don't want to accuse) moving contents from one locker to another, just to be funny I guess. I don't mess with that crowd -- always locked up.

LOCK IT UP....trust me, you will be much happier spending $5 on a lock and wondering what if, than leaving your stuff open and coming back to find out somebody has stolen your cell phone or a new pair of running shoes or something.  I do envy your gym atmosphere though since leaving your stuff unlocked is even a thought in your mind...

That would be the only thing I consider as 'etiquette' in this matter.  It's SO aggrevating to go from locker to locker that looks open, to keep finding clothes in them..

A lock also signifies that the locker is in use, which is a nice courtesy so people don't need to walk down the row opening every locker until they find an empty one.

Edited: nevermind, too slow...

I lock my stuff because I don't want it to get stolen.  If you're not worried about that, I don't think it's inappopriate to use a locker without locking it.  I'll admit that sometimes I get annoyed when I have to open a few unlocked lockers before I find one without stuff inside, but it only takes up a few extra seconds and it's not really a big deal

ALWAYS lock. i have stuff in my bag that costs some money to replace(work shoes, clothes etc) as well as some other general stuff that I would prefer not get stolen and the bag itself is expensive.
Way i look at it is it cost me 6 dollars for a lock and takes literally 5 seconds to open, and 50% less worry while im doing whatever it is im doing in the gym.
its a no-brainer for me, especially now-a-days.

I always use a lock even if there is nothing of value on my person.  What if someone decides to take off with my park and it's sub-zero weather out there!?!  Or even worse, what if some dipwad decides to take all my clothes ... just for fun!  Geez, imagine calling home and saying to your wife: "Honey, can you come to the gym and bring me shoes, socks, underwear, pants, a shirt and a coat?"

Lock, every time. I'm paranoid about getting my stuff stolen, plus it's a PITA to go down a row of lockers to find one that's empty.

On a related note, how much would it suck to innocently open a locker that had been stolen from, RIGHT as the contents' owner walked back into the locker room?

Always lock! I work at our Y and you woudln't believe the stuff that 1. have been stolen (socks, wet bathingsuits, underwear) and 2. The stuff that people don't lock up! (Rings, phones, ipods, etc...)
I don't really have much to lock up - most of my gear stays in the babysitting area w/ my kids in the diaper bag and my valuables stay in the car. The Y has little teeny lockable lockers w/ free tokens for keys, wallets and such. It's surprising how many people don't use them though.

I don't see how it would be "inappropriate" or a term of etiquette - I don't think anyone else cares of you get your crap stolen! But I always lock my stuff if I have to leave it in a locker somewhere. Luckily, when I go to swim practice, I can just bring my bag out and leave it on the bleachers. There is no one there when we are practicing; they only start to trickle in right around 6:30, when we get out (we rent the entire pool, which is why we swim at 5:30!!). But the fitness center opens at 5, so there are people in the locker room before we are out of the pool.

I think it depends on the part of country you live, the type of neighborhood the gym is in and and also the type of gym you go to.  I currently belong to 3 diferent gyms - one at work, a city gym with a pool where I swim and another by my house that my whole family goes to.

At my work gym I never see locks on any of the lockers.  I've used this gym for 13 years and have never used a lock and have never had anything stolen.

At the pool also never see locks.  I never even close my locker door....never had anything go missing.

The gym by my home I see locks here and there but they are more the exception rather than the norm.

I always lock too- for this very reason.  I've had things stolen twice at local gyms.  The first time, I lost a gym towel, some shampoo and toothbrush and toothpaste (who steals that?).  The second time, it was old gym clothes and, yes, my unused lock.

Classic!

I always lock - been burned a few times by having items stolen from lockers both unlocked and locked. I've seen where kids have had their winter coats and boots stolen and had to go home in sock feet and a T shirt [SHAKES HEAD IN DISGUST OVER THE PRESENT HUMAN CONDITION]
