Pre-race routine:

I am writing this for my wife and Her race. I paced her but she was the on who kicked butt.
Got up at 7:00 and ate some toast with peanut butter and a protein shake. Drove down town and got there at 9:15. Got our shirts and went back to the car. It was cold! Got dressed and ran for about 15 minutes to warmup. Got to the front of the race right by the start line.
Event warmup:

Ran through the alleys of downtown Denver for about 15 minutes triing to warm up. It was cold.
My wife was using this race as a Bolder Boulder qualifier. We were wanting to run 8:00 minute miles.

Comments:

My wife did not want to write this so I am doing it for her. She ran the first mile in 7:20. At 1/2 mile I asked her how she was doing and she seemed very out of breath so we slowed down considerably. After the race she told me when I asked her how she was doing she said she was crying. Biy did I feel bad. She said she was just scared, and she is at all of her races. She was very happy at the finish. The hills were strong and steady. She hit her Ventilator Threshold on the hills but stayed nice and relaxed. Hit it hard on the last 4 blocks. At this time Michele had some peanut butter coming up. She didnn't actually throw up. With 5 blocks left she turned it up and sprinted. I could hardly keep up. SHe was awsome.
What would you do differently?:

Not cry and not eat Peanut butter.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and founc her Brother and sister inlaw, and some other friends. We got interviewed by KBCO, a local radio station. Of course I talked about the race and my wife kept yeeling that we did the race for free beer. We did get several free Killians. I think she had fun.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Her breakfast.

Event comments:

It was hard to find the packet pick up.
I would have to say that I am very proud of my wife. She performed well beyond her expectations. I knew she could do it, she has trained very hard and has followed her plan.. Way to go SHEL!

No Hr monitor. I watched my wife and checked her breathing to make sure we weren't running too hard at the start.
Course: Started flat and fast and then ra a quick downhill next to Coors Field where the Rockies play baseball. Then up and down another hill. We went over the interstate into the highlands neighborhood. This was now a pretty steep long climb for about a 1/4 mile. Then donhill for a 1/4 mile and back to the 2 up and down hills, and 5 blocks of flat dowmntown finish.

Congratulations to your wife!

I know how you feel when you say that you're proud! I've been "guiding" my girlfriend's training  for about two years (Skyraces and MTB), and we are finally seeing some good results this year. I'm usually more nervous than her prior to and during her races.

And huge kudos to you for being so supportive of your wife!

Wow, and I thought YOU are a fast runner. Your wife is incredible - congratulations to you both. And Mark, you're so nice braving the cold with her to pace her.

I was at home sitting by the fireplace. I feel lazy now.
