Pre-race routine:

I was up at 5am to go get some coffee at Shipleys. Came back to the in-laws house for coffee, a muffin, and a powerbar. Did some stretching while watching Steve Martin's movie the Jerk. Left the house around 6:45am to get to Gtown High School for the race. Arrived at 7am, picked up my ship, dropped some warm clothes off at the car and took a pee. It was time to run and it was cold!!!!!!!!!!!
Event warmup:

Jogged from my car to the race start (couple minutes tops)

Comments:

This was my first running race ever. All my runs have always come in triathlons so when i started the run with fresh legs i was amazed at how eazy it was to run. That was until the group i was in pushed the pace on a few early climbs and then i knew my legs were going to get their money's worth. Thru oout this run i never felt tested as far as breathing but it didnt take long for the legs to feel fatigued. By mile 10 i knew it was really going to hurt but i was determined to hang with my group. I started with a group of 6 but at mile 8 we splintered and 3 people got ahead of us so i made myself comfortable with the other 2. We ran mile after mile and talked about whatever came to mind. Once we hit mile 14 it was headwind city. I ducked in behind my 2 partners and coasted along. Once we were out of the headwind we soon hit mile 17 and i floored the gas. I immediately put 50m on the 2 others and set my sights on 2 people several 100m ahead. I was slowing making ground but didnt think i would catch them until the last mile. It was then when the road got flat and then a small downhill. Me have long legs opened the stride and sucked those guys up fast. I blew past one and then got next to the other as we entered the high school. I then hit another gear of pain and got a 20m lead and held on for dear life. Once I stopped my legs reallt hurt!!!!
What would you do differently?:

Train for the distance more. I did only 2 10mile runs since IMAZ in november and was not sure how this would unfold. My aerobic engine is doing great but my run legs were weak.
Post race
Warm down:

Ate clif bars and blocks, fruit, cookies, pizza and gatorade. I was full!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

my extra 7 pounds around my waist.

Great race and really strong finish.

Running races are easy; just lace up the shoes and run.

With a bit more training, you'll be fast.

Great race todde! Gilbert who took 1st in your AG is a pro runner, evoe... well you know pro triathlete.. You just seem to have that extra edge to take in the pain like others don't and you can run thru the pain.

Keep it up and again, Congrats on making the Jack and Adams racing team for 2009.

I can't believe this is your first just running race...your legs were probably confused without doing the swim and bike first!! Awesome job on the race, and especially with the recovery from IMAZ as your "lead up" to it!
