Subject: Fat Tire class

Does anyone know the rules for the fat tire class?  Any specifics on tire size?  Do they have to have tread or can the be slicks?

Thanks

This.... is not what i was expecting this thread to be about. Now i'm thirsty.

But, for your question, perhaps the race you're looking at specifically would have rules? i don't know that there is a standardized fat tire class.

When I started doing Dua/Triathlons by 2004...I used my Mountain Bike and raced in the Fat Tire Division for some months...and...you are allowed to use slick or smooth tires...no problem...I don't remember if the USAT have especific size but I used slick tires...the 26 X 2.00 and what a big difference....they help you a lot...

I am doing a Duin March and I have copied and pasted what they have listed on their website.

Fat Tire (mountain, street, all-terrain bikes - tires greater than 1.25" or 30 mm).
Bikes that have tires narrower than 1.25 inch (30 mm) will be in the "Narrow” tire category. All other bikes will be in the “Fat” tire category, including “slicks”.

It may change from race to race or Director to Director, but i figured i would share what i have seen.

In my experiences, they do state what the regulations are to be considered a "fat tire". Now whether or not they enforce this very strictly is what I do not like about the fat tire divisions. I know that in the races I did with a mtn bike, some people had awfully skinny fat tires on their mtn bikes and to my knowledge no one checks the widths.
