Subject: in desperate need of bike shoes

So ... some time last fall I noticed that the sole of my right shoe is literally falling off, and I'm thinking that after 10+ years it is time to replace them. I found a pair I thought I would like online that would do for the couple of tri's a year + my regular biking (sporadic the last couple years, but I'm planning on more) that were at a great discount, but the fit wasn't quite right so they're going back. I'm looking for a place in the area I can go to find some good shoes at a good value because clearly I've got to try these puppies on before buying another pair. I think I bought my current shoes (Shimano with 3 velcro strap closure) at a Performance somewhere out in the burbs. Now I live downtown, so some place in the city would be nice, though I'm absolutely willing to drive for a good deal and/or knowledgeable staff.

Any ideas?

there is a performance on Diversey and Halsted.

I would think about Mission Bay in the west loop, Getagrip on Irving Park, or Element Multisport at Diversy//Damen.

I think Mission Bay is closed, no?  Thought they all went out of business??

Get a grip is VERY expensive...just an fyi.  They have really nice stuff, but it's not cheap. I got my shimano's at The Bike Shop in Glen Ellyn...they're really nice people...and I'm in the city too...not sure how I ended up out there?? Oh well! That's my $0.2!

Wow...I knew about the Arlington Heights location being closed, but was told the Halsted & Randolph shop remained open...until now. Wonder what went wrong with that place. I had a bike fitting done there last summer by a fella named Luke. He spent well over an hour, dialing in my bike...THEN, spent another hour fitting me on to several Cervelo & Guru bikes and had me take 'em all out for long test rides through the city. I thought that was pretty cool of him. I also purchased my wetsuit from them. Guess I'll have to find a new place now.

ETA - Their website is still up and running. It shows 2 locations - Elgin & Chicago. Anyone know if the Elgin shop is still in business?

I think their Elgin store went out a long time ago, and that's why the Arlington Store opened! Not sure exactly what went down, but there was a lot of different management issues from what I heard.

I am not sure if you can get out to Aurora, but they have an outlet mall w. a Pearl Izumi store - usually a decent amount of older model shoes for 50-70% off. Might be worth calling - I have picked up a number of shoes there and have been more than happy w. them. Otherwise, I found some great mtb shoes on ebay. Good luck.
