I have only worn Brooks Adr. shoes to run in and enjoyed every minute.  A friend of mine bought some "flats" and said he loves running in them for races.  They are light, but I worry about trying something different and injuries.  I am planning to do everything from sprint to iron distance this season.

Personally I train and race in NB 826. They aren't quite a flat but they weigh very little, are lightly cushioned and are very responsive. I have also worn the Nike Zoom for races but have always returned to the 826 trainer. There's no reason to train in the same shoe you race in though I've found the 826 to be the perfect trainer.

Agreed with the above posts. Gradually train in flats and work them into your routine. Once you are used to them and feel comfortable in them at race distance, then just wear them for your races.

FWIW: I wouldnt wear a flat for a distance longer than a 10k; however, this depends on personal preference, choice of flat, injury proneness, etc. I wear a very light flat (Nike Zoom Forever/Waffle Racers) which feel awesome up until the 4-5 mile mark for me. After that, I can feel the effects of not having good motion control. Such is the downside with using a racing flat. They are light, cheap, and fast...but obviously come with a compromise. Your results may vary, but just recognize what you are giving up with a flat, so you can avoid injury.

As I made quantum leaps in my training last spring I went from the Brooks Adrenalines (stability shoe) to Asics DS Trainer (performance trainer) for all my running. Guess I just got seduced with the lightweight. Should have just raced in them because it contributed to achilles tendon problems that I am still struggling with.

I bought DS trainers and used those as an everyday runner.  They did not last 300 miles.  They were great at first, but I felt like I needed more cushion on longer runs.  I guess I should've taken the same advice given above and just used the DS trainers for shorter runs and races. . . . . . live and learn I guess.
