3M Half Marathon & Relay
42F / 6C
Overcast
Total Time = 2h 11m 49s
Overall Rank = 2767/4177
Age Group = Clydesdale
Age Group Rank = 143/210
Pre-race routine:

Woke-up at 4:30, started the coffee makers and a bowl of oatmeal, got to the race site early to pick-up packet and have decent shot at a couple porta-potty runs. Then spent some time in the car talking with Kari before heading over to the start.
Event warmup:

Running from porta-potty to race start.
Run
  • 2h 11m 49s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 10m 04s  min/mile
Comments:

I started out conservatively, watching bunches of people passing me as I ran alone without my running partner for the first time in months. By the 3rd mile, I dropped my throwdown sweatshirt and picked up the pace on small nice long downhills. I would send a text message to Kari as I passed every 2 miles so she could try and drive from point to point to cheer me on. After seeing her about mile 3, I didn't see her again till she passed me in her car going down Burnet road (mile 8). At mile 9 I read a sign that said "speed humps ahead" and it made me remark (outloud). "I don't have time to stop for a quickie" Nobody around me thought that was funny so I sped up and drop that group. I felt the lack of training around mile 11. From there on it was just gutting it out. My buddy, Richard, sent me a timely text that read H.T.F.U. at that point that got me to the finish line without slowing. Overall, a decent run. I was definitely under-trained but the distance was not to much to push for today. It was awesome to see Kari out there and real boost when she drove by when I was struggling. Plus, she made incredible breakfast tacos when we got home, mmmmmmmm.
What would you do differently?:

Train more consistently, drop weight, be born in Ethiopia.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around looking for friends and drinking water.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training, genetics, my love of "spirits", packing boxes all week. Are we done yet?

Event comments:

I like this race because it's small and low keyed, plus the course is decent with some neighborhood running and some nice long gradual downhills. It's also at a great time a year and always nice and cold. I like the new course better than the old course since we don't have to be on Burnet road as long. That is my least favorite part of the course.

Hey, good race considering all the things going against you. Especially, that Ethiopian deal.

The lack of training didn't keep you from toeing the line and having a good morning.

Texting while running!?! It takes a heck of a good athlete to pull that stunt off. You've got me beat on that one.

Nice job there Mr. Harris, especially considering all the "distractions"!
