so i find it much easier to kick while on my back as opposed to kicking while on my stomach. im wondering if i can do all my kicking drills on my back as opposed to face down or on my side. i've tried kicking face down both with a kickboard and without, and neither one is enjoyable. when i kick on my back, my hip flexors are fried when im done, but i actually enjoy it. so....whats the deal guys, is kicking on my back an acceptable substitute?

It's easier for a reason.... not sure exactly why, but i've always heard that kick drills on the back is not helping at all. It may have to do with it doesn't cause you to balance in the water etc. Try the switch kick drill. I basically do most of my kick drills with variations on that one.

I know coaches who encourage kicking on your back to work on your kick.  But doing some kicking on your side may be more useful for working on your body position.

Some things designed to make you better aren't always enjoyable.  Get yourself some zoomers and kick on your stomach, side, and back.  Kick drills are technique and strength builders.  You don't want to short yourself by falling back on what is easiest.

As some stated above. Kicking on your side is good for body position and a very good feel for body roll and what that's all about.

With that being said I do about 60-70% of my kicking sets on my back in a tight streamline position. Mostly with fins or zoomers. I'll do some with a kick board on my stomach and some with out a board on my stomach if I want to work on a hypoxic type set.

No problems at all with kicking on your back. However I would add one thing here. Kick in streamline the whole time as it will force you to stretch out and engage in some body stabilazation.

Take a look at the pic attached but you would be on the surface of the water on your back in this position...

Good luck.

When we have kick sets (I HATE them) I mix them all up anyway, usually IM order, so I'll do some fly kick, breast kick, back and free kick.

Kick sets aren't meant to be enjoyed.  That's your first problem

maybe enjoyed isnt the correct term. i just dont hate it as much as i do when im face down. i do kick on my sides as well, and dont worry rick, i never use a kickboard. my timing gets all thrown off when im kicking face down and i have to rotate for a breath. when im on my back, i can get one whenever i want. when you guys are kicking face down with your arms extended, do you take a stroke to get your breath, or just rotate enough to get some air keeping your arms extended?

I use a kick board when I'm face down.  I don't buy the kickboard's are evil mantra--just don't use them all the time for your kicking.  I kick on my back and sides too.

They don't allow you to maintain any sort of form and are unnatural for your stroke.  If you are looking to gain leg strength by doing kick sets with a kickboard .... go the gym! Tongue out

I love the article by TriSwimCoach that was up last month ....... "Kick sets are great if you kick on your side, no board. Kicking with a board is just for "kicks"- social hour or to break the monotony, but does nothing for your swim."

I kick on my back and work on body position as well, Mike, and use a kickboard other times. My kickboard is pretty minimal and provides almost no flotation and I hold it way out in front of me, arms fully extended, face down in the water. I agree, I grew up a sim team kid and kickboard are fine, Rick doesn't know what he's talking about, he thought this was a bike thread...

I beg to differ about kickboards being evil. In fact, if you hold the top of the board with straight arms and kick head up, you are strengthening your back and building a kick that makes it much easier to site in OWS, especially one that is not wetsuit legal.

There is nothing evil about kickboards and there is nothing wrong with using a long kick set as a social break. I do 95% of my kicks with a kickboard but do like the variety of some side kicks and back kicks.

To the OP. It is important to work on your kicks as a strong kick helps balance your stroke out and make you a more efficient kicker. However you need to get it done works. When you do kick on your stomach try to initiate the kick from the hips and keep your ankles relaxed.

To the OP: A heck of a lot more talented swimmers have given you their opinion, so most would follow their advice.

I'll stick to my "off base" thinking on this one.  To each their own.

Nope, I don't.

(Because they are a waste of what little time I have in the pool).

Just be sure to say hello at Eagleman when you blow by me on the bike Rick! I'll stick to my kicking.

Actually, I would agree with that. If you have limited swim time, just swim.

My masters coach (3X Kona qualifier and 55 IM swimmer) told me 10 x 50 kicking is good for the IM swim.  Takes all kinds

I'll be the first to admit that hypoxic sets are still a part of my routine. I am not going to debate here about it. Personally, I don't really care what some "sports scientist" tries to tell me.

If it works for me then I keep it in my routine. When I don't do these types of sets my breathing is not as good.

But that was a totally different thread that I just ignored completely. Honestly, at the end of the day...the debate team isn't going to convince me to do otherwise. I'm too pig headed for that...

I do agree that if you are strapped for time the kicking would be the first things to drop from your workout. But I don’t think that’s a question here. Obviously the OP is trying to kick and quite frankly if you’re a bad swimmer you should be working on your kick too. Even if you’re strapped for time.

I am nearly the last person anyone should listen to about swimming...

With that caveat, I have found that after a few lengths of hard kicking drills (side and front, usually no kickboard), my 'normal' kick (4 or 6 beat kick, fairly relaxed -- I'm not kicking hard when I swim) feels easier and smoother and more streamlined.  I don't do the kicking drills to get stronger; I do them because it improves my form.  At least, that's what I currently believe.
