I am nearly the last person anyone should listen to about swimming...

With that caveat, I have found that after a few lengths of hard kicking drills (side and front, usually no kickboard), my 'normal' kick (4 or 6 beat kick, fairly relaxed -- I'm not kicking hard when I swim) feels easier and smoother and more streamlined.  I don't do the kicking drills to get stronger; I do them because it improves my form.  At least, that's what I currently believe.
