Comments: The 4:15 pace group started off really fast it seamed. I kept up for a few minutes and then thought it was ridiculous and I would take it a bit easier. At that moment, my friend Jackie and her husband Spike caught up to me. They were keeping the pace, so I decided to try to hang with them as long as possible. My heart rate was already 170 and seemed to climb higher and higher every mile. By mile 10 it was 180 and I question whether or not I'd be able to finish if I kept it up. I decided to forget that I was wearing a HRM and just RACE to see what I could do. At mile 13, Jackie and Spike stopped at the portalet. I kept going and yelled at them to catch up. I was getting tired, but tried to keep the pace. I felt a little rumble in my tummy around mile 16, so I stopped to use the restroom. No luck in the bathroom, but my tummy felt better. I decided to go an extra station inbetween gels, and I didn't have anymore trouble. My legs were TIRED by the end, and I knew they would be fried from the high heart rate. I gave it my all and PR'd by 10 minutes! My half-way split was 2:10, and the 2nd half was 2:14. Not too bad ;) I brought 6 PowerGels with me and took a Rhodiola tablet at mile 13. I ate 5 of the 6 gels and drank water at every aid station except the first 2. What would you do differently?: Run more than 3 days a week. Training in the winter is hard! I skipped a bunch of runs because of the weather and just plain laziness. I am interested to see how well I could do if I trained properly. Overall, I am very happy with my race efforts :) Post race
Warm down: Walked, Walked, and walked some more. We hit Cafe Du Monde for more coffee and to try the beignets. Then for dinner we walked to ACME Oyster Co, and walked around Bourbon Street. I LOVE New Orleans and can't wait to go back. We stayed at this adorable hotel, Plaza D'Armes, right in the French Quarter. I will definitely stay there again! Saturday we arrived in New Orleans at 9:35am. We did a lot of walking around the city that day. Had a Muffeletta for lunch (YUM) and stopped at Cafe Du Monde for Cafe au lait (YUM again)! For dinner we had a spinach and shrimp pizza from Italian Pie. Before bed I drank a slim-fast, and drank another when I woke up at 5:15am. Then we headed to Cafe du Monde for more coffee. Race began at 7am.
Lined up with the 4:15 pace group.
