Age Group Rank = 1306/1679
Pre-race routine:

Slept in Hilton in Arlington with Paddy and Jeannie. Tea, Clif and fruit. Metro then walked to start line.
Event warmup:

Stretching of legs and that was it.
Run
  • 5h 04m 52s
  • 26.2 miles
  • 11m 38s  min/mile
Comments:

Was running too fast at first and despite attempts to slow down, really didn't until I stopped just past halfway to pee. After a 20 second break my pace dropped by almost two minutes per mile. Hit the wall twice. First around mile 15-16 and then again around 20-21. At first bonk, I had trouble running in a straight line and so picked out the striped line on the road to follow.

6,581 Calories.
8,404 out of 11,127 men.
HR and mile splits come from watch. 5k splits come from timing pads.
What would you do differently?:

Train for 18 and 20 mile runs. Take on more fluids. Don't stop to pee.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked out to Arlington. Met Pat and Jean for a few minutes then walked to Arlington Holiday Inn to catch cab straight to Del Ray Halloween Parade.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Did not train enough in last month. I took on fluid at every stop except at the first mile yet I was still thirsty and slightly dehydrated as I finished.

Event comments:

Plenty of fans and support crew throughout race. My favorite fan sign was a well dressed woman in Georgetown with handpainted sign that said, "We won't judge if you crap yourself."
Paddy stayed with me despite the ability to go faster. I kept urging him to leave me back, but he wouldn't.

Course: Pretty course. I think it was new this year; either way it was new to me. The bridge around mile 20 into Crystal City was a total mental break point.
