Lastly, if I'm really hurting I'll make stupid deals with myself, "Just run to that tree and you can slow down."

x2. And often I'll get to the tree (or lamp post, or whatever) and realize that I can probably make it at the same pace until another tree farther up the road, and so on until I've completed my run without much change in my pace. Having those small intermediate goals helps me stay with it longer.

I'm taking some reminders into my first IM next week. I'm making a couple of small laminated cards:

24 weeks training:
Swum xxx km
Ridden xxx km
Run xxx km
HTFU and finish on a high

Why IM? Achieve the impossible!
Can always quit later.
What would Mahe do?
Pain is temporary. Glory is forever
Pain will happen. Suffering is optional
Of course it hurts; it's Ironman
Time to run, 1 mile!, then 1 more after that
Choose to win or choose to loose. It's only a choice

Gerrard - love the idea!

When are you heading down to Taupo - are you going to have time to soak up the atmosphere?  I'm off there on Wednesday morning.

I have a motto that I put on my RoadID:

I am an athlete.

It really works for me!

That is a sweet one ^^^^

Whenever I hit a wall or want to stop, a little voice in my head says "become a machine". A machine feels no pain, no suffering, no fatigue, and has only has one focus. It does what it was created to do, either swim, bike, or run.

My long runs are more mental toughness than physical conditioning.  I know my body can do them, but my mind questions my body.

Yesterday was a good mental toughness run; passed another guy climbing a fairly tough hill about 17 miles into my run, and got a "Nice job, man" out of him.

I told myself early in the run that there would be no walking that day.  That's what I repeat most often in my long runs and races (more like "we can walk from the finish line, but not to the finish line!"
