Subject: Trail running shoes?
I've run trails before (not often) in my regular ol' running shoes, but I'm thinking about adding trail running into my regular workouts. And I'm thinking about doing an Xterra tri this year. Do I need trail running shoes? What are the benefits? Any particular brand you like more than others?

Here's a recent discussion about these to get you started.

Depends on the trail.  If it's real technical stuff, lots of rocks, I'd consider it.

If the trail is pretty easy, then regular running shoes work just fine.

Definitely check the trail first.  Running in trail runners is definitely a different experience than running in regular running shoes, and takes a couple of runs to get used to.

Thanks for the responses, y'all! I don't get on the forums as often as I'd like. Work gets in the way of so much stuff.

I usually train on trails and I wear road shoes, the same ones I race in.

That is a good point. My Asics are $110 a pair. Maybe buying trail running shoes wouldn't be a bad trade-off to keeping them in decent condition longer.

I have a pair of trail waterproof shoes as well as my normal running shoes. I use normal running shoes on trails when it is dry sometimes, but also sometimes use my waterproof ones on the roads if it is pouring/ muddy to try and save my normal shoes.

I'm running trails in CO foothills thru mud, snow, rocks etc in my road shoes and have yet to trash a pair.
