Pre-race routine:

Got up around 5:30 after not really sleeping much from 4 on. Had a couple cups of tea, made a flat out wrap with PBJ and banana and out the door with bike gear in tow.
Event warmup:

We met at the Harbor and rode in at an easy pace for 13 1/2 miles.

  • 18.21 mile/hr
Comments:

I've never done a bike race and it's really all about staying with a pack and strategy. I stayed with the first half of the women (last wave all women) for almost the first half of the race. Fell behind on the big mile long hill and then never really caught up. My age group has some hellish cyclists.
I worked really hard though and averaged 18 miles per hour. One of my sister VB's came up and I started riding with her the last 8miles or so. We took turns leading and it's really cool how that drafting thing works. You just can't do that in a tri. So a really new experience for me. I was part of a peleton!
What would you do differently?:

Work harder to stay with them up the hill. If I were really going for it on this race I would have trained hard, but this was really a training day that included this hard ride for me.
Post race
Warm down:

Hung out afterwards, watched many of our VB's get hardware. :) Ate some oranges and drank some cold water. Rode back to the harbor, another 13 1/2 miles back to the car. I rode pretty steady on it though. My legs were a little toasty.
I got sunburned a bit on my arms. Didn't put sunscreen on because I started out with long sleeves and forgot.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Hills are hard.

Event comments:

The Marines know how to run a race, run it on time and many "congratuations maam" were heard. Very polite young men/women.

Congrats on hanging in the peloton! You're a lot braver getting out there in the pack than I am!

That whole peloton thing sounds daunting. Way to be gutsy enough to try something new! Great job, and great race!
