This is my first Tri. I'm training for the 1/2 Ironman in Austin in October. What's the best advice you can give to a newbie?

I'll start with the basics, swim, bike, and run, a lot.

The bike course is crowded, it's a 4-loop course through downtown so be ready for a lot of bike traffic. The run course can be brutal if it's hot & sunny out because there are large stretches with no shade & you're running on city streets. The swim is in a river without a lot of current, and it may be wetsuit-legal.

Swim, bike, and run lots between now and the race.  Do the race with the goal of having fun and learning as much as possible.  Don't worry at all about about your time, how you place within your age group, how everyone seems to have fancy bikes, etc.  The course itself is relatively easy (no real hills) though the heat can make the run challenging.

Then swim, bike, and run lots more to get prepared for October.

Do you have a wetsuit?  The water can be a bit chilly.

Depending on your wave, bring a bottle of water or Gatorade to drink after they chase you out of the transition but before the swim.  It can be hot and up to an hour before your wave starts.  You don't want to start dehydrated.

Also, how are your bike handling skills?  If not so good, be very cautious at the bottom of Congress as there is a hard right turn.  People can get a bit squirrelly on the course since it is 4 loops.

Lastly, or actually most importantly, remember to have fun.  This is a hobby so make sure you enjoy yourself.

Do some bricks prior to race day. On race day go to a low gear/ high cadence pace on the final two miles of the bike, so you don't suffer the run. Enjoy the race, don't worry about position, just feel pleasant. Triathlon is the best thing you can do with clothes on!

I saw a guy changing a flat 10 min before transition closed this morning in San Marcos.  They happen at the worst time!

This is odd; it looks like they're saving the pros until the last waves of the day...well behind even the first-timers.

Awesome.  I'm in the last Olympic wave, an hour and 20 minutes after they kick us out of transition.  That sucks.

For the noobs to this race:  bring a throw away bottle of beverage to consume after they kick you out of transition because they rarely have drink stations set up.  And if it is hot, you'll pay for that later.  Also, if you have a long wait like me, wait to put on your wetsuit as long as possible.  Unless your in the male 40-44, then suit up early! WinkSmile

This one is wetsuit legal.

What is the "Invitational Wave" that starts first.  I assumed it was the Pro wave until I saw your post....

Pure speculation, but it might cost more to close down downtown Austin (police, fence rental, etc) than is required at a more rural race.

I guess I could see that.... still kinda pricey for a short race (sprint $100, olympic $120 until 5-21) IMO.  Maybe the goodie bag is really nice.

CapTex is race that's been around a long time and draws a big crowd. It cost more because people will pay it. It's not your typical small local tri with 400 people in it.

Other big name more popular races are quite a bit more expensive too. Though the US Open in Dallas is not real big yet, they are driving for it to be and already demand a much higher price than all the other small time races in the area.

I'm wondering if they get permits for a back up day since the rain out a couple of years ago..

Nope, they moved the event to Monday so there's no backup day anymore. That was a one-time thing, apparently.

Does anyone know what the usual water temp is there?  It's not anywhere on the website (that I can find).

I think it is usually in the 68-72 range.

There's a little blurb on the website on the Swim and Run Routes link.  It says "Water temperature is typically 78 degrees and cooler. Wetsuits are usually allowed."

In years past, the temperature is close to 78 degrees but they try to find the spot that will allow the wetsuits.

Alright 7:30 swimstart. I'm getting a bit nervous since I haven't been able to train for over a week and don't know when I'm gonna get back in the groove. I'm on some meds for my GI issues right now which should hopefully be clearing up within the next couple days.
