New question: can you pee while swimming?  It was hard to do but I managed to make it happen during a race this summer.  Massive overhydration...

Sure...always make sure I do right before finishing the swim in a race.

Peeing in the pool goes in the "just because you can, doesn't mean you should" category of adult behavior.

No, no, no. I can't believe people are too lazy to go to the bathroom.

The next big question is do you pee in your wetsuit?  NO WAY

When we water skiing and we use are wetsuits I wouldn't let anyone use mine just because of this issue.  I don't want anyone peeing in mine.

macaco - 2005-03-24 1:34 PM If it is limited to pee in the pool I could probably live with it..anything else and you may end up like Joe with turd-o-phobia. I myself..will not pee in the pool - I get out and go the 3 feet to the hot tub to do that..that thing is disgusting anyway.

This has GOT to be the most classic response to this question. I laughed so hard while reading this at work I almost got busted!!

This thread was funny until I read this:

All things put aside, you know when your swimming your putting every part of every other persons body in your mouth...WOMEN are "open" with bodily fluids always being extracted into the pool...MEN are not to be discounted from that either. Point is, if you are so disgusted with the thought of merely PEE being in the pool your swimming in, then maybe you ought to consider swimming in the shower for practice.

I may never swim again. I hope the staff loads up on the chlorine.

I know that urine is sterile and all that, mostly ammonia, chlorine kills off any bacteria. Still, it's just common courtesy. As someone said, if you're too lazy to get out and whiz, why are you doing triathlons?

On the plus side, I learned two new words today: bodag and chode. I've always known these as dingleberry and taint, respectively.

What you guys don't pee in the pool? I thought everyone did...

A couple weeks ago my Coach was surprised when I got out of the pool to take a leak. I think the expectation at that pool is to just let loose. He probably thought I was loafing. Oh well...

Just think of all the nasties in the water. In summary:

1. Pee
2. Snot
3. Sweat
4. Spit
5. Did someone wipe well?
6. Ear wax
7. Band Aides w/ blood
8. Blood w/o Band Aides
9. Love juice
10. When was the last time that guy showered?
11. Hair and Skin
12. Barf

Pour me a tall glass of pool water!

Love juice? Dude, how excited do you get while doing your swim workouts?

Sometimes there is too much H in the water and there is only one solution.

Well even beaches can have problems with unhygene people who are like hey its a big lake I can go around peeing everywhere. Maybe not pee but for other reasons.

I really really hate the people in not swimwear who come out of the sauane and just in the lap pool to cool off. I think that is very gross.

if I am going to do like a 1.2 miles swim I will to it at a time I know I can get out and pee when I have too. I just drink too much pool water not to have too.

Since everyone is so grossed out about pee in the pool, this story will really kill you...

I was listening to a Jessie Stensland interview where before the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon the competitors are riding in a boat to the start. She was standing in a very crowded part of the boat with all the other triathletes when she feels a warm liquid flowing around her bare feet. She looks over at Peter Reid who is standing next to her and he's got the "guilty" look on his face! He basically peed in his wetsuit, the pee runs down and out of the wetsuit and ends up on the floor.

What was even more shocking was that Jessie told the story like it was no big deal. If it was me, I would have opened a can of whoop a$$ on Peter!

Maybe he noticed she was getting a bit of athlete's foot on her toes...

The pee in the pool doesn't bother me nearly as much as the stuff floating around in there.  I mean... what could possibly be FLOATING about 2-3 feet below the surface?  It's not heavy enough to fall to the bottom or light enough to float to the surface?  Ew. Ew. Ew. Ew.

I've heard enough former HS competitive swimmers talk about barfing in the well that runs along the wall, that I'm sooo not surprised about that.

Course, I thought about this and the asparagus thread at last night's swim session.  And I also noticed that the pool water tasted "salty".  I'm just hoping that was the Chlorine.

i have to have my mind erased after reading this thread!
yuck, double yuck!

i hold it when i'm swimming to the point of a stomach ache sometimes... whoever pees in the pool is disgusting...

i always remember a sign at my grandmother's neighbor's house (we used to swim in their pool) it said "i don't swim in your toilet, so don't pee in my pool!"

it is only sterile to that person, IIRC

Actually urine is only sterile to someone else, meaning you could not ingest your own. This is a survival technique. That's assuming you have a buddy with you...I think I'd rather just die.

I think that the the first choice instead of saying I NEVER pee in the pool, should say "I'm lying in an anonymous poll."

Uck! Ignorance is bliss! All this time I thought I was safe from pee b/c I was swimming in the adult fitness pool, not the kiddy play pool. I am shocked that there are adults that pee in the pool. I know it's sterile but PLEASE! Would you pee in the kitchen sink if the bathrrom was occupied??? (don't answer that ). I always get out of the pool when I need to go. When I was pregant I got out of the pool 2 or 3 times a workout.

I think they should add a chemical to the pool which when it comes in contact with urine, would turn a bright color. It would be obvious from the pool deck whom the lifeguards should eject! Although... it would kind of be too late. I think everyone else would get out of the pool when they see "the colored cloud" following a swimmer!

Amazing how a thread like this takes off! It reminds me of a thread on a surf forum I am on. The topic was.........."Do you pee in your wetsuit".......it went on for 6 or 7 pages!

So.....do you pee in your wetsuit during Triathlons? Surfing for 3 - 5hrs you almost have to!

I used to spend 15 hours a week in the pool in my youthful swimmer days and I never peed in the pool. Yuk!

My 2 year old son does the pool pee though. But he does wear a very attractive "Finding Nemo" swim nappy (that's diaper for most of you guys). Now maybe I should start making triathlon branded swim nappies. You know: Carbon fiber race models, built in GPS, buoyancy panels etc. . At almost 30% in the poll peeing there is clearly a market for this. Maybe I can get the ITU to outlaw pool peeing as well.....

Um...huh? Since sterile simply means "free of microbial contamination", sterile is sterile. What's sterile to one person is sterile to everyone.

Well that's a different question all together. If the poll asked if you peed in your wetsuit when you went scuba diving, I'd have to change my answer. But, I don't dive anymore so maybe I just wouldn't answer. In the pool, however, never. Peeing in the pool is for toddlers. Anyone else should know better.

I was kind of scratching my head on that one myself.
