I hope I'm not biting off more than I can chew.  The sprint on Saturaday will be my first tri, following up on Sunday with my second tri (the quarter). Mark

I'm doing the sprint on Saturday AND the Space Race on Sunday!!!  My hope is for good recovery too!  Good luck to you.

Fortunately the water is fairly warm in Galveston.  Or at least it has been the last couple of years....brian

Okay, I was told that it was the "take your break away kind of cold".

I would love to know the reality.  I purchased a Neosport Sprint Shorty Wetsuit.  I don't see any cold weather tri's in my future, so I thought this would be the most versatile choice and would keep my core warm and would work for spring tris.  I cycle in 50 degree weather, so I'm hoping I'm tough enough to go with the shorty... wait.  I AM TOUGH ENOUGH.

Any thoughts on wetsuits?  Although I guess it's too late for me now!

The water will be around 72. That's hardly "take your breath away cold"....

Given the warm weather we've been having, and the race being a week later, it could potentially be warmer than that. At 72, Pros CAN'T wear wetsuits, so it's pretty warm.

People DO panic on the swim. Best advice, just sit up, tread water, lay on your back, and relax if you start to panic.

You'll be fine

Thanks KEJ.  Truthfully, I'd rather not be bothered with a wet suit -- even a shorty at that. At least I'm ready, if needed.

This will be, technically, my 3rd tri.  I was part of a relay team for my first and did Tri America in Clea Lake last summer.   This one is my precursor to the Danskin in June.  I decided to do this one when I heard it is one of the best-run events for both participants and spectators.

As this is my first tri, is there any benefit to starting in the first-timer's wave rather than with my age group (35-39).  I'm expecting to finish in the 1:15 range (+/- 5 minutes).

I'd be happy to finish under 90 minutes!

I have the bike and swim down... but of all things, running outside is where I fall short.  I started training for this event late, but I'm certain by the time the Danskin comes in June, I'll be ready.

I'll be in the beginner wave too... I'm 41

I think the only advantage of the first-timers wave for you might be that it is less intimidating, if you're worried about the swim.   There will be plenty of people in your AG finishing between 1:10 and 1:20 so you'll be in good company starting in your AG wave!

I'm doing the sprint on Saturday and its also my first time. I'm really excited and nervous at the same time. 5 days to go! Any "words of wisdom" in regards to the meal the night before?

Don't overeat.  Eat whatever you like.  Don't worry about carb loading nonsense.  Don't eat anything you've never eaten before that will potentially upset your stomach.  Eat a very light meal about 3 hrs before your swim wave start.

Have a great race!

Main thing is to eat normally, not overeat or eat unfamiliar food (don't go out and eat Indian or Thai food if you don't eat it regularly).  Generally, I don't eat anything too heavy or too late in the evening (after 9, except maybe small snack).   You may be a little nervous and don't want to upset your stomach anymore than it may be by having too much food still working its way through your system.   And whatever you do, don't take a page from the the Michael Scott pre-race meal plan and eat a plate full of Linguini Alfredo 10 minutes before the event . . .that would soon become carbo unloading!

THanks for the advice guys. I'd heard so many different things about carb loading, I decided not to do it. I'll just eat what I normally do and hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.

It looks as though the weather is going to be pretty good. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

This is my 5th time to do the sprint in Galveston. I do not wear a wetsuit. Im only in the water about 12 minutes. My son did it last year in a speedo but he did the swim in 8 1/2. The water temperature is currently 72 degrees. You can check the temperature here: http://www.weather.gov/view/validProds.php?prod=TID&node=KHGX. Once your core gets wet you wont notice the cold.

Spidey is right... I live by the rule "Nothing new on race day" (or the day or 2 before).

But 65 in the bay... wow I am surprised!

I am crossing my fingers for the 73!

I wish I could have done it with y'all today but I hurt myself something fierce last night which stiffened my upper back this morning. I came and cheered y'all on this morning anyway. Props to everyone; especially the 76 & 70-years-young triathletes. Truly inspiring. For the 1st timers, welcome to the club.
