I just go to the movies because it's the only time I can justify eating enough popcorn to feed a small village. *hijack on* - I love how theatres offer a tiny little cup of popcorn for like $4.00, then tell you for an extra $0.50 you can get the 5 gallon bucket. - *hijack off* |

I've got a popcorn maker, a big HDTV and great sound system. I can eat my popcorn, drink my soda, and not have to worry about missing the good parts of a 2-3 hour movie when I have to go pee. Maybe I should practice letting it flow for my bike rides? |

Resident Curmudgeon 25290 The Road Back | Subject: RE: Watchmen.......don't! Reviews are mixed, even polarized it seems. Two examples: Pro: "This epic is to superhero movies what The Godfather is to gangster films. " Con: "A pretentious, over-long, pseudointellectual mess. Self-indulgent and boring, this overhyped dud is one major waste of time." |

Just a bit long and tedious, by typical movie standard. The film was beautifully made. I wish it were a 2 part TV special. I wish they had done a "Kill Bill" type movie. Where they do the first 1/2 and then a month later do the second 1/2. If they had been really true to the graphic novel (like Lord of the Rings - not change the ending, add in the Black Freighter, Under the Hood and the relationship between the kid and newsstand vendor as some quick examples) it would've been a 5 to 6 hour movie. The motion comic book is just under 6 hours and even that had edits for time. |

Sensei Sin City | Subject: RE: Watchmen.......don't! It was a spontaneous move, but I saw it at midnight on Thursday (first showing). I can see that it was nicely made, and that fans of the graphic novel would like it. Several times I felt like I was 'missing' something as a couple people were snickering about some random line or 'look' a character would make... But for me, never have read the novel, I thought it was a little slow and a LOT long. I have seen many 3 hour movies before, but this felt a lot longer (could have been because I was there from midnight to 3am). I wouldn't say DON'T go see it, but it wasn't that impressive to me. All the best special effects in the movie? - you get to see in the trailers... |

ChrisM - 2009-03-09 12:36 PM I just read the I'd give it a B I posted something similar to this on the other Watchman thread - If you've never read the story and go to the movie blind, you wont like it that much. At best, you'll give it a B-. You won't get the significance of the opening montage and you may get lost in some subplots. If you read the graphic novel in anticipation of the movie, you may give it a B to B+, like ChrisM If you read the original comic - the 12 issues, you'll give it a A-. IMO the movie can't be an A or A+ because the change of the EVENT (no spoiler) really took the movie down a peg. No sir, didnt' like it. Again, this was ground breaking in 1987. It's hard to put it into context after 22 years. Vietnam was still a sore topic of discussion, Nixon was still alive and considered a crook (unlike after his death), the Cold war was still going strong with nuclear annihilation being a strong possibility and never before was there such a group of anti-heroes been put together (1940 Comedian and the original Silk Specter rape scene, Rorschach just killing the bad guys, an impudent Night Owl and a big blue naked guy as some examples). This series really did change the look and feel of comic book heroes forever. The movie is something that has been anticipated for many years by fans of the Watchman and I feel it is a good companion to the comic/ graphic novel, but no where near as good.
