What's the best way for a runner to workout legs? I have a trainer who is a body builder and sometimes I find that after we work legs, I'm almost too sore to run for the next few days, and I'm definitely slower. Am I working legs too hard? How much is enough and how much is too much and how will I know if I'm getting an adequate workout without compromising my running performance?

We do alot of squats, lunges , & leg presses. Usually 4-5 sets with heavy weights. Currently, I'm running about 30 mi/wk and have an injured hamstring. It's not too much of a problem to run 4 or 5 miles, but on the longer runs of 10 or more, it's pretty  painful.

I try to do weights on days when I won't be using those muscle groups (much) the next day. That means I can do upper body before a run or bike day, legs before a swim day, and a total body before an off day.

I do strength training 2x a week. Usually on Monday and Friday. I get up early, do my swim workout, then lift. For legs I do the smith machine for squats and lunges. That's the only leg exercises I do (sometimes the standing calf machine too). I don't do heavy weight b/c I don't need that, nor do I want that b/c it would totally kill my legs for my run and biking workouts. I usually do light/med weight with more reps. I hope this helped!

The one lift that I know has really enhanced my running is the single-leg split squat. It is challenging and works a range of muscles (quads, hamstrings, core, even forearms), also it somewhat mimics the stride. I have finally graduated to grabbing a 45lb plate, hold it directly out in front, throw one foot up behind me on a bench, while the other is straight and flat on the ground - then squat. You will drip with sweat and grasp for air if you do it right, and probably be really sore. But in a couple weeks you'll notice the explosiveness coming from your hamstrings during those hill climbs and surges.

Don't forget about those calves too!

if you feel a little tired/sore during training and you do not have a race soon it is usually ok.  As stated above, I would make sure your trainer is aware that your goals may be different than theirs.

If you feel like you are injuring yourself STOP rest reassess  resume with new plan

I don't do a lot of leg work - I make sure i get lunges in.  i do plyometrics.  i have incorperated calf raises, squats, leg extensions, and leg curls.  I do plyometrics before high intensity run workouts.  I do weights after a run or bike usually.

Lunges have been recommended for leg workout.  25, rest, 25 will burn your legs good.  If you are near a beach, beach running is well recommended too.   Start with shorter distances as your feet get used to beach running.  The benefits are a good leg workout and your back does not suffer the consequences of regular running.  You should be running barefoot on the beach (no shoes or socks!).   Yes, its possible to get blisters on the toes but for me, the go away.

For anyone debating socks v. no socks, I went all last year using socks for the run (training or competition), and found out this year through trial that no socks whether training or in competition is much better for my feet, particularly my toes.   Big difference, at least for me!

my cross country/distance coaches have always incorporated a lot more plyometric, balance drills and lunges into our strength training as opposed to the power lifting.  we were probably only in the weightroom once a week squatting/pressing...this usually didn't kick in until track season when we needed to focus more on explosiveness.  i dont lift weights with my legs these days, only the strenth/balance drills

most people would probably be surprised that plyos were designed for people who were already moderatly advanced in their lifting.  typically 1.5-2x BW squatting track athletes.

For my first couple years of running I tried to continue my previous habits of weighted leg exercises. I was focused on running gains versus strength gains and saw little return. In the last 6 months I have switched to more bodyweight kind of crossfit-ish exercises and have found better run gains with easier recovery as well. Lunges have been great, along with body weight squats, box jumps and light wieght straight leg deads. Mostly high reps which has helped with endurance a little I think. Also a fair amount of hill runs. Been thinking of going back to the weights to see if there have been any strength gains with this though??

Plyos are great for runners!

x2. there is some evidence that plyometric exercises can help you improve your economy, however the caveat is that those benefiting the most from plyos are those who have already developed their running economy substantially by running a lot consistently. That means that your best bet is to 1st run more and once you log a good amount of load then add plyos...

I have done plyometrics with the p90x program. It's good that reading the blogs, that will help with the running. I don't do a lot of legs but do squats, lunges and then everything else.

Are you getting proper nutrition for the lifting you are doing?  Good protein after a workout?

I wonder if you're having recovery issues?

More running is going to be your best bet. haha.
Most pure runners advocate not doing strength leg work in the gym.
Rather focusing on core exersizes and some upper body(endurance) to help with those less used muscles by runners.

However, strength training is important, as runners tend to lose muscle with age as quickly as non-exercisers.

Sounds to me like you have your ratio upside down. Talk to your trainer about going to high reps/low weight. Rather, more like medium reps/medium weight (I find that to be a good balance for reduced joint wear with adequate muscle development). Then again, I've never done weight training in order to increase my running, just as part of an overall gettin'-stronger program, so take that FWIW.

In ANY training program, you should ask yourself before every single movement if you are working towards your goal. If the answer is "I don't know" or worse, "No," then don't do it!!! Too many trainers (and people working their own programs) decide they "need" to do XYZ when it doesn't mesh with their goals. If your goal is to have phat, ripped legs, then have at it with high weight/low reps. If your goal is to PR a 5K/10K/marathon/IM, then make sure your strength training meets that goal. Busting out a killer set only to, well, kill your run is counter-productive if your goal is to run, yes?
