I want to take an unfamiliar MTN bike trail and I was thinking of loading up a route TO my Garmin.

What's the best way to do it?  Training Center does not have detailed enough maps.

Is there a way to plot the route on BT or google earth, then transfer it TO the Garmin to take out in the field?

Build it on mapmyride.com and save it as a course file, (i think the file extension is crs) .. another choice is to map it on bikely and save it as a gpx file, then use a grx to crs converter program to build a crs file.

Once you have a crs file you training center to load a course, then on the watch selt training, courses and select to do the course .. the map will show as a line you can zoom in and out on. Also if you use the gpx2crs program you can have it add left and right markers. You can also add them in training center.. your watch will notify you of upcoming turns etc

A new twist...

I found that someone did the loop with a Garmin Edge305.

I can download several different file types.  Which one should I get and could load up to my forerunner305?

They offer a NAVfile course file OR a GPX file for non-edge users...

Would the NAV file for the edge work in the forerunner?

Should I hit up Garmin support?

Never used a NAV file before.. not sure on that one

GPX can be converted w/ gpx2crs

I will have to see if mapmyride has detailed enough photos for the bike trail...

So TC uses a CRS file?  Cool.  I might play around with it tonight.

Yes in the "courses" section.. it may also support other file types like tcx but not certain right now

just found a course on map my ride and downloaded it. I can't seem to get it into my watch though. I have a Garmin 305 and I can't seem to get it into the watch. It shows up in my training center under course though. Any idea what I'm not doing properly?
