Subject: Cost for Coaching...

I'm long in the tooth enough to try the BT search, but didn't really find anything conclusive.

I'm interested in looking into a local coach.  If I wanted to dicker around about price, what should I consider a fair price for local coaching?

Lets say it a 'basic' level of coaching.  Maybe contact once a week, develope some workouts and/or a race plan....

I pay a little over $100 a month for a GREAT coach who I can contact as many times as I want by phone or email. He gives me my personalized workouts, race plans and any other advice I want. He is an amazing athlete and has a great history with athletes.

That being said...I know other coaches in my area who charge almost $300/mos for limited contact and generic workouts.

The best you can do is look around and consider your budget. I knew I couldn't afford more then $200/mos and got super lucky with my coach.

x2 on the shop around. I did some recent coach shopping, and I found a widely varied level of cost, and a wide approach in how workouts were set up. Some were little more than downloading a BT plan and emailing someone about it once a month, while others the coach seemed like he moved in. :D

Also, interview the coach like you would someone you were hiring for a business. A coach that you don't agree with or has funky philosophies that you will ignore anyway is just a recipe for throwing money away.

My coach runs me $200 a month, unlimited email and phone, personalized plans.

I'll also be starting coaching again soon, and he will be monitoring my plans to make sure I'm not killing anyone. Not right away, anyway.

$100-200 seems to be pretty standard for basic to mid-level coaching.

Something else to keep in mind: does the coach have group workouts for their clients included in the price? Sometimes they'll even have a team with kit etc.

Some of my friends in the Rochester, NY area who are coached by Mary Eggers of Train-This coaching were very happy and surprised to find that they get so much out of being part of the Train-This team, both socially and athletically. That's in addition to their expectations of the coaching relationship.

Mary is my coach!! And I live in Detroit. She is excellent about contact and group events (none of which I can go to...) and generally reading her clients.

Prices vary and what you get varies. Unfortunately, you don't know what you are getting until you are paying.

you can get something as cheap as $100 or high like $300-$500.00 x month. IMO most good certified coaches (USAT, USAC, USAS, USAT&F, etc) in general with personilized plans (monthly, bi-weekly or weekly), flexibility to update it any time your needs require it, TP account, HR/GPS/Power file analysis, unlimited contact (most important service IMO), group training (when possible), testing and other services will run around $150 to $250 USD x month. (USAT Level 1 will be on the lower end Level 2 or Level 3 on the higher end)

* FYI - I did a market analysis late last year comparing some of the best coaches in different locations in the USA and that's how I came up with that average.
