This probably a topic most guys don't even think about..ever (except for the guys with long hair). I was wondering if any ladies out there had any advice for what to do with your hair on race day. I have medium length hair and in the first sprint I did I just kept a pony tail low in the swim cap and than was good to go for the helmet, but when the run came I had to take out my hair tie and replace my pony tail higher on my head during the transition (i can't have it low in the run...it looks weird and it bothers me and I have to have it in a bun). I was thinking of doing like a french braid thing...but was hoping someone else has perfected this area. It's not really a big deal, but it would take some time off in the transition and I wouldn't have to think about it. Thanks!

And no I will not shave my head.

I suspect my hair is longer than yours, but for race day, I am all about the braids.  My hair is long enough I can do a ponytail and then braid it - for shorter hair, french braids may be the only way to go.

I can't do a ponytail for race day (run or tri) because the hair sticks to the back of my neck, and a braid takes care of that  If my hair were shorter, I'd be up a creek.

a big beehive,

nope, braids are the way to go, I've done a sort of french braid thingy the night before and slept in it so I don't have to think about it in the morning.  I have ridiculously fine hair so have to use a tiny rubber band to secure it as I find proper hair thingies just fall out.

I put mine in a ponytail at the right height for my helmet/hat.  I braid it really tight so that it won't fall out and then I run in a hat to keep the "flyaways" out of my face.

Ponytail, and if it slides down a bit, oh well. Once my hair gets wet, it's a disaster anyway, since it's naturally curly- not corkscrew curls, but enough that when it dries on its own, it turns into a frizzy mess.

I just got my hair cut, though and now it's too short for all of it to go into a ponytail - so I will probably just rock a headband or a visor on the run.

I am in the same boat as you.  Very thick and curly, but not nice curls.  When my hair gets wet, it is a sight!  I am really torn now as I want to cut is shorter but am worried about not being able to pull it back.

Always a problem!

I have a black stretchy headband thing from Lululemon (expensive yoga store) that is probably about 1 1/2 inches wide, and wore it the other night during my run. Worked well.

I put it in a ponytail that's the right height for my bike helmet.  I grab a hat in T2 and fix it while I am running and put the hat on.

My hair isn't long enough to braid.  That seems to be the best way to have it stay where you want from what I've seen of other people.

I do a french braid, either one or pigtails, one of each side.

My hair is curly as well and not the cute type, and very fine.  If I did not baid it, it would be unmanagable for the race.

When my hair was shorter I did two french braids starting at the front with a part in the middle to keep all the bits in, now that its longer I just have one braid in the center. Even so, the swim cap musses it up, so I wear a hat for the run. I've gone hatless and in that case use a stretchy headband (those goody no slip things) to keep the fly aways tucked in while running.

This is what I do.
I start the race with a hair tie around my wrist so I'm not searching for it in T1.
Low ponytail for the bike.
Higher ponytail for the run.

Low tight ponytail, then braid the out of it and cinch it with another hairband at the tip. This tucks up into the swim cap, fits fine with a bike helmet, and allows for my visor to fit normal for the run.

Sometimes I'll change it up with the pigtail braids too, if my cat hasn't eaten all my hairbands...

I have the awesome combination of hair that is mid neck length and gets frizzy curly when it air drys.  I tie the top half back and look like a total nerd with no head gear so (as another lady said above): swim cap, helmet, visor.

Now

ETA: Now it's getting longer and I can have a short ponytail Cool

Ponytail for the swim and bike, then I put a visor on for the run to keep the crazy hairs out of my face.

I have medium-length hair as well. I put it in a regular ponytail before the swim. I just kind of wrap it in a bun-like thing under my swim cap. Once or twice I fixed my ponytail at the start of the run because it got annoying, but for the most part, I never touch my hair again once the swim cap goes on.

I sorta do what the OP stated...I start out with a low ponytail that will work with my helmet, and swim with that, hoping that it doesn't fall out. Then in T2, I have to undo the ponytail and re-do it higher up on my head (like Pebbles) because I can't stand wearing a low ponytail unless I absolutely have to. I've never thought about braiding...simply because I don't know how to do it! Sad, I know! I'm not really into fussing about my hair much. So what is the difference between a regular braid and a french braid? Maybe I could teach my hubby to braid my hair for me...LOL!

Uh I know I can't stand having the pony tail low either...it just bothers me...I can't even stand having it not in a bun cause it whips from side to side...and I don't know how to braid either...unfortunately I might have to resort to my mom helping me with that oh well.
