Ok, folks, whatcha think????
We're working on moving the finish line for Longhorn to the Sports Arena at the Expo Center. It's a 6500 seat arena, that hosts an arena football team. It's got a huge sound system, great lighting, air conditioning, tons of bathrooms, LOCKER ROOMS with SHOWERS, great concessions for families, big screens, etc.

Our thoughts: Swim at Decker, and bike from there. FINISH the bike at the Expo Center for T2. There's a huge covered/fenced area for T2 to rack your bike (we'd do bike handlers, so you wouldn't re-rack your bike, like Kona) and you'd grab your bag to put your running shoes on, etc in the changing tent. Then, you'd begin the run by running through the arena (there's a huge ramp right through the middle of the arena).

For the second loop, you'd also run through it. Then, you'd finish in the arena, like a ROCK STAR.

This would accomplish a couple of things...transition would be grass at the decker (we'd move it to the lower level) and concrete at Expo, so no dust. You'd also be RIGHT at your car after the race, and wouldn't have to walk back to your car from Decker Lake. It'd also be much better for families, with plenty of food, seats, etc.

It'd be a very unique finish, and make things easier on you all. We'd transport your swim gear from T1 back to the expo center following the swim.

Thoughts????

Nice Keith!  I like it!

But not at the cost of Quadzilla! Make sure that stays.

I've done two different "point to point" races with two different race organizations, and they both went off without any problems (for me and the people I knew who raced that day).

One race had T2 racks just like any other transition area. So they had busses running from the host hotel to T2 so you could drop off running gear, and then busses running from T2 to the start. Bikes, of course, were racked overnight just like a lot of races.

The other race issued disposable numbered bags at the start for you to place and hand over run gear. At T2 they had volunteers with radios about 200 meters  out from the dismount line getting race numbers from people coming in. Volunteers in transition grabbed your bike and handed you run gear and they you could just sort of pick a spot to put on shoes, bag your helmet, and leave it. When I finished my helmet and bike shoes were next to my bike in a numbered rack. I had no problem, but logistically this seemed like more work for the volunteers.

Either way my point is that people shouldn't fear the point to point thing. In both cases it made for a much better course under the circumstances, and that to me was more important than having a traditional transition. And after racing at Lonestar and volunteering at Longhorn in 2007 (first year for both events), I have no doubts that Keith will make sure everything is in place to make it work just fine.

Awesome.  That would be a very unique finish.  I've done point to point races before and had no problems with transitions.  I'm doing NO 70.3 in April and it's a point to point also.  Seems to be a happening trend.

Mrs Fish did a point to point with a "moving" transition at Ironstar HIM. Me and the kids volunteered as transition movers.

They had wetsuit bags as well as T1 & T2 bags, and a very large, clear plastic bag. Number stickers were placed on all the bags.  T2 bags were packed with run shoes, race belt, hat ect). T1 was set up like any other race. While the athletes were in T1, they simply put the wetsuits into a bag with goggles and any other swim stuff and left it at T1, T2 bags were left at the bike racks as well.  As soon as T1 cleared, we put the bags (wetsuit & T2 bags) into the larger clear bag to keep them together, then into large trash cans with rack number stickers on them, loaded the cans into a U-haul type truck and drove it down the road. We took T1 contents (wetsuits, run gear, ect) and the T2 bags about 5 miles down the road to T2. Everything was bagged with numbers. T2 was set up in the same way T1 was, so the athletes basically knew were to go. They also had rack locators to help the athletes get to the proper rack and spot. The difference was, T2 bags were lined up in numerical order off to the side, as they came in on the bike, someone called out on a bullhorn the racer number, a volunteer grabbed the T2 bag and met the racer at the T2 rack location.  Most of the time, the volunteer had the bag waiting at the rack before the rider got there. They changed shoes, dropped the helmet and off they went. There were LOTS of volunteers need for this to happen smoothly. I think it went smoothly from a volunteer perspective.

I think the arena idea sounds great, similar to the IMLP finish.....

That sounds seriously cool, Keith. I like the idea.

There's definitely some logistics to getting everything back from T1. Athletes are going to need to understand that everything needs to be bagged up before they get on the bike, otherwise you guys will have a lot of work to do.

The major potential hiccup that I see is locating T1 down by the swim exit. I'd love to ditch the long run up to T1, but where will the bike exit be? I would assume you'll have it come out in that little turn around area by the right hand ramp. But with pros coming out of the water in under 30 minutes, you're going to have waves that haven't started yet still crowding that area. The other problem is that there isn't a whole lot of room to get on a bike and get clipped in or get feet in shoes before having to pedal uphill.

The other option is to have the mount line further up the hill after it levels off a bit.

Still, very cool idea overall.

You mean I have to think about LOGISTICS????????? Crap, I guess I gotta call the whole idea off

I'm thinking of doing a clean transition, where everything is in bags for each Transition. We'd have racks for your bag in each transition, plus a changing tent. Only thing at your bike rack would be your bike.

All bags would be labeled/numbered, and we'd transport to Expo Center from the Swim area while you all are out on the bike.

While it is a 2 transition race, it's only a mile between transition areas. Logistically, for the athletes, not too difficult

Okay, smart guy, but you still didn't address my point about the bike exit/mount point.

Again, I don't think about crap like that. I just wing it....

With the Swim exit on the lower right corner, the bike out would be at the top left corner, to make transition fair for everyone. With the size of transition, the bike mount would be on the flat portion.

Not a concern at all, at this point. Worst case, we could just leave transition where it's been in the past, but I'd like to avoid the dust/dirt if possible.....

Ok, it's done. Finish will be at the Arena. I just booked it.

Now, we're also going to add camping there, RV sites, and campfires each night with, s'mores, bbq and more. There are 60 RV sites, and unlimited campsites.....

Since we have the arena, people deciding to camp can use the Locker Rooms and showers in the arena for their stay.

Sounds like a great plan the way you laid it out. NOT having to walk back to the car with a bike in tow after racing 70.3 miles sounds ever better!

Reducing the busing fiasco is a wise decision all the way around. I also vote for NO GRASS in transition.

GO FOR IT!!!

PS- the transitions bags work fine for IM's all over the world. I'm sure it will work just fine for a HIM.

The greatest thing about this race: October 25th. Glad to see you took it off the Red River Rivalry gameday. Texas is at Missouri the day before; great planning. Race sounds great, Keith. Y'all put on a 1st class event.

That sounds awesome Keith. I think I'll rather do the Longhorn and skip draftwater, that way I can do the Endorfun trifecta: Mooseman, Tman and Longhorn!
