Okay, so I was reading this article about whether a helmet would have helped in a ski accident.  And came across this quote and just scratched my head over it...

"The human body is a sturdy one, but only up to a point, able to withstand collisions of about 15 miles per hour, which is about as fast as an average person can run."

I hope they mean sprint for a few seconds at that speed.

Whole article HERE.

I'd really hate to run into something head-first at 15 mph.  Just saying.  Ouch.

13.6 seconds for a 100-yard dash gets you the same velocity as 4 minute miles.

I'd say that an "average person" could have run 100 yards in 13.6 seconds at some time in their life, which would represent the maximum potential impact speed with a stationary object.  This is not equivalent to being able to run this fast every day of your life, or even a majority of the days.

Journalism failure....what else can you say.

As far as helmets and skiing, isn't it common sense that a helmet can't save you from everything and every accident? Same thing goes for bike helmets, seatbelts, airbags, hockey pads, shoulder pads, hockey helmets, etc, etc, etc. It's all about minimizing risk, not eliminating it.

x2.  Why add to the risk unnecessarily?  In addition, I caught this line from the article:

" If they're moving faster than 15 or 20 m.p.h. and strike ice, hard-packed snow or another solid object with the head, they're likely to suffer severe injury, and again the presence of a helmet may not make much difference."

Really?  Because I think we've all gone more than 15-20 mph on the bike, and while a crash at that speed would not be good, I am more concerned about the road rash and the damage to my bike than I am that my helmet will fail and I will die.  Maybe suffer a concussion, but this reads as if it makes no difference if I have my helmet on.  Without a helmet, I am pretty sure I will sure pretty severe TBI, but having one will make a big difference.

I remember a bunch of years back when I was still a couch potato a car full of friends and I passed by one of those flashing speed traps that had no cops in sight, needless to say we stopped and took turns running past it. I hit 20mph which I thought was pretty good. I would like to see if I could go faster now.
