My parents are visiting right now, and this afternoon I decided to go for a short run.  Great idea, the kids can ride their bikes while I run and grandpa (just turned 75) can take my mountain bike and come along, too.  So we get the kids all set with their helmets and are just about on our way to the trail, when I notice my dad is heading out with just a hat on.  I grab one of my helmets and have him put it on.  We don't get a tenth of a mile from the house when he grabs too much front brake on a slight downhill, the front tire stick solid, the rear tire goes vertical as he goes straight over the handle bars landing right on his head and face.  He's got some road rash, but the front of that helmet took a big blow and spared him a certain head injury.  Moral of the story is don't pass on the helmet even when you think you are just going for an ez spin with the kids.

Glad he's okay.  Sounds like you need to toss the helmet too.  I think they're only good for one hit.

Gosh.  Glad he's OK.

You probably know this, but in case not:  you can probably get a free replacement from the manufacturer.  (I was able to last summer after a wreck.)

What a great object lesson for the kids! (Although I have a patient who still refuses to wear a helmet even after getting a severe head trauma when he was hit by a truck - oh, he not only did not wear a helmet, but had his ipod on!!!!)

Glad your Dad listened and put on the helmet. May he heal up quickly.

I have seen so many famlies out riding and the kids have helmets on often wearing them like a bonnet and not protecting the front part of their head, and parents are not wearing one. I have even spoken to a Dad at school about the poor example he is to his son by not wearing one. His excuse he grew up not wearing one in the Netherlands...we'll I grew up not wearing one either..they weigh nothing and are comfortable. One saved me from great harm when I crashed head first into a metal street sign post going 20+mph.

Great reminder..thanks for sharing and glad your Dad is okay.

X2

My helmet saved me a few days ago, I messed up and hit a tree limb pretty hard, knocked me off my bike. It hit hard enough that the inside of the helmet gave me some road rash and the helmet has 2 permanet dents in the outside plastic at eyebrow level.

I had forgotten that helmets need replacing after taking a hit till i read this post.

Good point! Yeah, accidents happen REALLY fast and a head against the pavement is not a good thing. Glad he is OK!

Glad he's okay.

I saw a man "pushing" his kid on a bike yesterday.  Kid's feet barely touched the pedals, no training wheels...No Helmet.  Kid waved at me as I ran by.  I commented on the "big kid" with no training wheels but quickly added "put on a helmet, protect the noggin"  After a few too many ER/tauma pts unhelmeted wo had life ending injuries I don't care who I offend when I shout at them to put a helmet on.

This is such an important point.  I have a goofy race picture of ME like this, from before someone cared enough to set me straight: top of the helmet should basically run straight across above my eyebrows.

Now I'm sometimes bothered by a picture on a box of cereal I eat: the cereal company likes to show families doing fitness things together (see? our cereal is part of a healthy lifestyle!), but in one of the pictures, the boy has his helmet pushed way back like that.  And I think, "maybe I should send an email to the cereal company..."

absolutely, great that you gave him a helmet and he wore it!! But also...awesome that he is 75 and is out riding a bike!!! (for those NOT in the triathlon world, that is unusual).

Hope he heals quickly!

Day 2 my dad is doing fine.  His face is pretty scraped up, but nothing too bad.  Sore knee, sore back, all-in-all not too bad given a crash the day before.  He regularly rides his own mtn bike at home, and he still does regular walk/jog sessions.  I hope I am in his kind of shape at 75.  He was a runner for decades, and did sub-3 marathons back in his prime.  Wish I had some of that running mojo, but he kept all those genes to himself.   Thanks everyone for the well wishes.

I am so happy that your little cycling trip did not turn into a worse experience.  Sure dad got a couple of scrapes but he is well and that is thanks to you insisting he wear a helmet.  You should be proud of yourself.

Helmets do save lives.  I know because had I not been wearing a helmet when I had my last accident I would certainly be dead now.   I got thrown a good ten feet in the air and landed on my head ... or rather ... helmet!

A bike helmet saved my life - I know it might sound rude but I talk to everyone I see riding a bike with no helmet.

I'm glad he didn't have the helmet on the handle bars like the guy I saw yesterday. I wanted to scream the question at him why he even brought the stupid thing along... Glad grandpa is ok!!
