Subject: Fuel for morning workouts

Hey all.  For those of you that are working out in the morning, what are you doing for energy/breakfast/fuel?  I'm trying to make the transition to getting up in the morning (mostly for the bike.  I always run out of daylight if I try to do it in the evenings), but am not quite sure how to go about getting myself into gear.  Do you eat breakfast, then sit around for a bit, then go workout?  Do you get up, take a gel, and go to it?  This morning I just went out for what I thought would be an easy 3 or 4 mile run, and I bonked so hard after 2 that I just called it quits.  Please help.

I usually eat a banana and drink some water on my way to the pool or walking out to start my run. Seems to work fine for me (up to an hour's workout).

I drink cytomax during my workout. I'll eat half a clif bar first thing if I wake up hungry.

I really don't think you "bonked" (i.e., depleted your glycogen supply) after a two-mile run unless you've been starving yourself for days.

At the most, would eat half a cliff bar before a morning run. Most of the time I'm OK for my 5.5-miler just with a normal meal the night before. I'm more concerned with recovery foods after the workout.

You know you get an extra hour of evening daylight starting Sunday, right?
BT arranged it years ago just to help newbie triathletes train

Is that just for performance (bronze, silver, gold) BT memberships?

I usually do a 3-4 mile run or 10-15 mile bike then 400-700 yd swim on nothing but water in the mornings. I tried to eat a Clif Bar before working out in the mornings, but I didn't like that.

I am with the Bear. Eating after is more important to me then eating before I work out. Hydration is what is important to me in the mornings. I usually have enough enegry from the previous to do the morning workout.

For me nothing beats a smootie for breakfast, a little fruit and yogurt in the blender and must have a cup of coffee and out the door

Drinking water or a sports drink such as Gatorade or Isostar is all I care about in the morning before a workout. I generally eat weel enough in the evening and always have a little something before going to sleep.

If I am planning to go for a long while, over 90 minutes, I may drink a milk shake with Inkosport Crash Weight (basically a high carb and protein mix shake with maltodextrin and some faster sugars). Some people can not stand milk before an effort so it is also OK to have it with water.

Solid food may be OK for a ride on the bike, but a no for lifting, running or swiming for me.

As other said hydration is the main preocupation, eating for recovery after is the next. Just the same for a race, and try different things to see what works best for you.

I plan to start running in the morning (3-5 miles), since after a night run I have too much energy to get any sleep. Now I need some help on what I should consume after my morning workout. Thanks in advance,

I do NADA without having eaten 2 kashi brand frozen waffles and downed a cuppa coffee. Then maybe a banana or some yogurt if I feel like I am going to work extra hard.

Just started doing Early morning Saturday rides so I can be finished in time to bring my 4 year old to Swimming Lessons at 8:30. I need food and coffee to get me going, so I tried this.

Mocha Smoothie
1 cup cold coffee
1 banana
1/2 cup vanilla yogurt
nestles quick chocolate syrop, just a liberal squeeze, don't know exact amount.

mix it all in a blender night before, and store in fridge over night. Gets me out the door in about 15 to 20 mins, seems to be enough to get me going.

Let me know how you make out.

Sorry

Forgot 1/2 to 1 cup milk. Could use soy as well I guess.

Cheers

I have a Detour or U-Turn bar (300cal) before my morning swims.  I'll have a much more substantial (800+ cal) protein shake with 1 cup of raw oats and 2 tbsp of peanut butter before my Sunday morning long ride (2-3 hours).
