Extreme Veteran 767 Alexandria, VA | Subject: RE: Afraid of Sharks It depends... is it a phobia or just a conscious fear? As in, can you control it, or do you start shaking, sweating, and sh....ing at the thought of swimming with sharks? How much you should be concerned is really relative to how much the fear effects your performance. If you can get offer the fear, I think the sharks will leave you alone, for the most part. |

Extreme Veteran 981 Maryland | Subject: RE: Afraid of Sharks I didn't particularly like the idea of swimming out far into the ocean when I first started, and I still don't for training. But when the race gun goes off, and there's 2000 other people out there, it all goes away. Part of it is probably the odds at that point, and part of it is that it's a race. I might not like being the last of the group. :-) But in the middle, that seems ok. The same thing sort of happens for me with riding the bike down hills "too fast." Not in training, but race day is totally different. Edited by kalalau 2009-03-30 5:43 PM |

Do you know how many people are swimming in shark infested waters every minute of every day and doing just fine. I am a former shark marine biologist and I can tell you that I also think about it but sharks are like any animal. They are programmed to attack based on a few ques such as size, shape, vibration etc. A human almost never represents these ques. In very rare circumstances they are but does a pack of 300 triathletes trudging through the water sound like anything you would find in nature....no...therefore probablility of shark attack ....0 Then again If you go to South Africa and do the same thing during seal season ...probability of shark attack....100%i |

Veteran 363 Ft. Myers, Florida | Subject: RE: Afraid of Sharks I have the same fear and live in SW FL. For whatever reason, as long as I know someone is with me or at least watching me from shore, I'm fine. But if I'm on my own, I panic. However, sharks have never stopped me from diving or snorkeling when I lived in the Cayman Islands. Then again, you could see straight down for 250ft. But seriously, when you're out with a pack of other swimmers, with kayaks/boaters following, you really have nothing to fear sharks. (Unless you live in Austraila...that's a who different eco system all together.) I've done over a dozen open water swims in Florida and the Caribbean and never had an issue. I won't train in the water alone, but I have no problem swimming in a group during a race. My biggest fear: jellyfish!!! Got hit by a Man O' War once and had to go to the hospital. Those things don't care at all about large splashy groups of people. I'd rather swim with sharks than jellyfish!! |

Know how I earn a livin'. I'll catch this bird for you, but it ain't gonna be easy. Bad fish. Not like going down the pond chasin' bluegills and tommycods. This shark, swallow you whole. Little shakin', little tenderizin', an' down you go. And we gotta do it quick, that'll bring back your tourists, put all your businesses on a payin' basis. But it's not gonna be pleasant. I value my neck a lot more than three thousand bucks, chief. I'll find him for three, but I'll catch him, and kill him, for ten. But you've gotta make up your minds. Oh Crap - when exactly is seal season................. I think about sharks EVERY time I am in the water. I am terrified and I prefer swimming with my goggles fogged up a bit and in rough sea because of this. Yes, odd I know. I have once had a panic attack in the sea because I But I do live in South Africa and sharks, including a Great White have been seen off our beaches. In fact a Great White was spotted the day before we did a sea swim last month. But saying all this, nobody has ever been attacked in our area and there are a LOT of us in the sea regularly. Although I am terrified, you can get over it and sea swimming is now my favourite part of triathlons. I try and get in the sea at least once a week, and now with Ironman coming up I have been OWS twice a week. I suppose there are things you can do to avoid attacks, like staying out of the water at dusk and dawn (or so I have heard). Dont go swimming in the middle of a sardine run or near a seal colony. But other than that.... How would you rather go? Doing something you love or of boredom because you spent all your life on the couch? I always thought I was safer in a group but lately the words "bait ball" seem to keep popping up in my head. Especially after watching this video of a sea swim in Australia earlier in March.....

Master 2404 Redlands, CA | Subject: RE: Afraid of Sharks I get the same thing when I'm surfing, more because you are just bobbing out there in the water with nothing to think about. I've only seen one once (a great white) and that was when I was on an Assault Ship (USS Duluth) and luckily not in the water. Is it an unreal phobia? Yeah, but we all have them. I have a major phobia of Mountain Lions when I go trail running or mountain biking. |

I just keep looking all around expecting a shark to come out of nowhere. Unfortunately for me, this also will happen in a pool. Feel free to point and laugh now. |

Depends on the shark. And really, if I can see it, my odds are pretty good. If you're gonna be scared, you should be more scared about the ones you can't see. Cause they are always there. |

Member 1699 | Subject: RE: Afraid of Sharks doubleplay - 2009-03-30 5:05 PM You really should be concerned. Sharks kill around 100 triathletes in races every year all over the world. If I were you I would back out of that race. This is misleading. Sharks don't kill 100 triathletes in every race. Sure, 100 racers get eaten in a few events, but that's pretty rare and in the longer distances. Usually, it's like a dozen racers get attacked by sharks in a triathlon, and that's an Olympic distance. It's less for a sprint. I was surprised at so many fresh water sharks in the Chicago triathlon. The victims were too, ha, ha, ha!! |

New user 7 | Subject: RE: Afraid of Sharks Granted swimming like bait, and scuba are vastly different.... But, we dive around alot of big sharks, mostly without incident unless we are spearfishing. Diving is more comforting because you can sit on the bottom and see them coming (mostly) and identify species and gather what risk you are in... As others said, odds are pretty slim. Remember you don't have to swim faster than the shark, just faster than the guy beside you |

Extreme Veteran 790 Rocklin | Subject: RE: Afraid of Sharks I was in Maui when there was massive storm...the ocean literally turns red from the red dirt being dumped into the water from the flooding rivers. The next day I was going to do an open water swim down K'aanapali beach when the lifeguard (who I have known for years), asks me, "what the hell are you doing brother?" I told him about a 45 minute swim, and told me I was such a tourist and that I should stay out of the water until its blue again. Why, well the tiger sharks come in and eat everything that gets dumped into the ocean (racoons, skunks, feral cats), and its basically like chum. Tigers will eat dead things...unlike most of the big sharks, and they will come into shallow water to do it. I chose to stay out of the water, and that same freaking day a toursit got hit on the big island in Hawaii. She only lost about a bit sized chunck of her calf (in 4 feet of water). With that said, the wife and I are planning open water swims next week down the same beach. I will have my head on a swivel!!! It's irrational, but growing up in Santa Cruz and seeing Jaws, I'm terrified of sharks. |
