Subject: spinner fit vs. roadie fit

I've joined a gym to maximize my training with two toddlers...

I've assumed my fit on a spinner should be done more or less the same way as for my roadie, yes?  I've ridden a few times that way - I adjusted/measured approximately for myself - and the fit feels fine.  E.g., my LBS adjusted seat height by having me place the heel of my shoe on the pedal in the 6oclock position with leg straight such that when my toe is instead on the pedal, I cannot lock my knee while seated.

I ask because a friend was fitted by one of the personal trainers and her legs look really extended at 6oclock position, much more than I feel.  We're the same height/inseam and her seat position is waaaay different from mine.

Should I do my own thing which seems right... or have a trainer fit me?

When I spin at the gym I try my best to get the spinner close to my tri bike as possible. I would go with the way your bike is set-up!

I would not rely on a personal trainer fit from a gym.  You just don't know what their training is.  Go with as close to your normal set up as possible.

The trainer who did my friend's fitting is an HIM/IM level athlete who has earned a spot at Kona more than once.  Of course not all athletes make good trainers.

I'll stick with my fit and hope my friend doesn't get injured from her 'fit.'

Thanks BT

And not all (in fact not most) athletes know how to properly set up a person on a bike ...............

I'd suggest you go with the way closest to you road bike on a spin bike then you know you'll be comfortable and less likely to injury

I was discussing this at a spin class a couple of weeks ago with the spin instructor who is also a roadie and that is what she told me.  Ask one of the spin instructors (preferably one who rides outside) if you need help as they should be trained in the fit - and you definitely shouldn't be locked in extended position at 6 o'clock position.

You can always measure your bike and compare it to the spin bike set up you have.

Top of middle of saddle to center of the crank works well for equal seat height.
