Subject: Feeling stressed about upcoming Sprint Tri
The Amarillo Town Club Sprint Triathlon is coming up on April 10th. It is a 400yd swim, 10 mile bike and 5k run. My new friend and personal trainer, Shanna Armstrong, wants me to enter the event. The thought of this appeals to me as it will be only days after my 40th birthday, so what better present to give myself, right? Quite frankly though, I am having some severe anxiety about my preparedness. Shanna is telling me that I am ready and it will be a good experience for me and that I should not be concerned with how I finish. My concern is *whether* I finish. :-( She said that she would run with me the last leg for encouragement and that I shouldn't worry.

While it is less than a month away, it gives me an immediate goal to work towards. However, I have only been training a short while and don't want to do something stupid. Does anyone have any thoughts? Can anyone check my training logs and let me know what they think? I still have some time to decide, but surely someone here has some experience with this.

Looking forward to your comments.

Some would say that training for a tri in general is stupid. What have you got to lose. I peaked at you logs and see that you long distance in each event is longer then the sprint tri. You have a little time to get in a little more training.

YOU CAN DO IT.

You aren't trying to win, and if their is no other race in the near future, you have nothing to lose. The best practice is the real thing. You will suprise yourself.

I'm sure you can do it. My first triathlon was one that a triathloning friend with experience convinced me to do and I had not been training on any regular basis -- and especially not running. I had 5 weeks to put it together and I did!! Finished, not last, and hooked.

Go for it, and have fun. Savor as much as you can, it will be the last time you do your first tri....

You can do it!!

Why not give it a tri...  You'll give yourself something to improve on next time.  Your logs look ok , only a month training, tri doing a brick next week to see how that feels.

Might want to check you diet however 32 oz coke for breakfasst????

Gambler,

You are a man after my own heart. (YOU CAN DO IT), man that cracks me up everytime I hear it. But you can do it! Why not? You not only can do it, you've got to do it. Trust me you'll regret it if you don't. You'll wonder what if. I've looked at your logs. Your fine. You have the rest of this month to train. You'll be good. Don't stress, just press - on!

Ovetta.

From what you have said about Shanna previously, it sounds like you can trust her completely and if she says you can do it, you can do it.
The thing about triathlon is that it is not really important and you shouldn't worrry about the results. You need to go there with the attitude that you will not be beaten but you need to know the results don't matter.

I'm thinking if Shanna Armstrong says you can do it, there is only one other person that needs to think you can, and it isn't me.  BELIEVE IN YOURSELF!!

GZ, I had a fair amount of anxiety that I would be able to meet my submitted time of 7:45 in my first 300M pool swim. The race was yesterday, and I did the swim in 6:48, while passing about six people! What a shock to me!

What I am trying to tell you is to prepare yourself for the race. You have the time. Make a plan and stick to it, when it comes race time, your body will know just what to do!

Rock on!

A big part of training is psychological. Try not to let the negative thoughts creep in...look at all the positive quotes here and try turning negative thoughts around into positive ones (even if you don't believe it). Write them down...it is going to feel corny and ridiculous at first, and then if you keep looking at the positive stuff, voila it starts becoming a part of your thinking!
How is that for Stress Management 101? Should I write my own self help book immediately?

If Shanna Armstrong told me I was ready for a tri and that she'll run the last leg with me I'd do it, even if I finished in the very last place. How can you not do it, just to see what it feels like?

Peter,
I would say "GO FOR IT"!! Don't let anxiety hold you back. Brick train, so that you are ready for the transition from the bike to the run. Start putting events together and rest some the week before the event. Lubbock and Amarillo are my old stomping grounds...I would like to eventually do the Buffalo Springs .5 IM. Like you, I am nervous, but I want to use the energy to move me forward, not to turn me away. If your trainer says you are ready, then start the mental training part, b/c the old carcass is good to go! Enjoy the journey! I would wish your first race to better than mine, and my first race was great!!

Most everyone probably has reservations about their first tri.  Heck I have reservations about all of them.  As others have said believe in yourself and you will accomplish your goals.

I concur with everyone....go for it.

Take a deep breath, do your best and be proud of what you've accomplished.

Wow! Thanks for all the words of encouragement.

After taking a quick run this AM in the cold and drizzle, Shanna phoned me to run with her at the gym. I was a little anxious since I have never run on a treadmill before. Anyway, I started slow and worked my way faster. I was able to run 3 miles without stopping once. The whole time Shanna is cruising at high speed chatting the entire time. I thought I was going to collapse. Once I stopped, we sat and talked. I explained my apprehension to her and she said that it was normal. She told me that she was impressed that I ran over 1 mile this AM in the weather and still ran 3 miles with her uninterrupted. She assured me that I was ready.

Long story short, I filled out my application for my first triathlon April 10th in Amarillo, Texas.

Now...for the Sprint should I wear green or brown with my hazel eyes?

Just sign up for it for the tri...you can do it. I would suggest that you line yourself up behind Shanna and go after her...she is all the incentive a man could want to complete a tri in record time! Actually, all kidding put aside, she probably knows what she is talking about. Just go for it and enjoy!
