apparently the threat of Box Jellyfish is too much.

Sorry for everyone who was planning to do it.

You would think that an organization that is not foreign to Hawaii and plans sports events that includes a water component would plan around a routine environmental event. It is normal for the jelly fish to appear at the same time every month on the south and windward shores. They should have planned this thing for a different date in May. My calendar shows when the full moon is going to happen and so should theirs. I think they may have solely been loking at Mother's Day and the Kona 70.3 when picking this date. I am disappointed since this was going to be a) my first full Olympic Distance and b) was scheduled to be my third USAT Tri for this year's rankings. On the bright side I guess is that if they were going to eliminate a leg, swimming is by far my weakest leg.

Wa supposed to be my first olympic too.  Looks like you can register up until packet pick-up, so if things change i may still race.  Otherwise, wait until Tinman.

That's exactly what I said ~ every calendar shows when the full moon is and since I'm already registered I'll be doing it either way.  I guess my first tri will be at North Shore!

There might also be a sprint on the Marine Corps Base in early May...still waiting to see if registration opens up.  It would make an excellent first tri and they're usually cheap too.

That would be cool ~ let us know!  Plus, I have family coming to town and they were super excited to be able to see me do a tri so if I could find another one around the same time that would be GREAT!!

That's the one, just not sure why registration hasn't opened yet with less than a month to go.  But I'm in when it does!

We will most likely not know until race day if the Honolulu triathlon becomes a duathlon. The race director is saying that even if race day there is no swim that they will allow people to swim the course the day before if they want to. This would not be my first tri that got turned into a du and most certainly it will not be the last. The reason why is things happen outside of the race directors control. My first tri that got turned into a du was the Xterra East Championships in 2003, this was because the James river was running so low. With the Honolulu tri planning is very difficult because not only does the race director have to plan a time when people will do it, but also when the City and County allow them to close down roads. For those who live on Oahu you know that Nimitz Highway is a very busy road all time of the day and for even half of it to be closed down any day is not good for traffic in the city. There are only two races that I know of that closes down the road. Great Aloha Run and Honolulu Triathlon. So yes they knew the Box Jelly fish may be a problem but they had a few bigger masters to serve. I hope to all of you at the race even if it does have a second run.

The one on May 9th sounds good. I think my husband will be doing this one when the registration opens up.

I am already registered for Hono, so I'll race no matter what, just a little disappointed. I'm doing Tinman as well, but its not a full Olympic due to the shortened swim leg.

As to closing down Nimitz/Ala Moana, the Honolulu Marathon also shuts down a section of the road. Don't get me wrong, I know that race directors have a great deal to deal with, but I can't agree that the Hawaii jelly fish is something that can't be planned around. I know the race director can't control the appearance of them, but we do have a pretty good understanding of when they will appear.

On another note, don't know how many of you are aware, but Ko Olina is supposed to be back this year. No date announced, but their website says they are running it this year. Kind of a unique one with the swim-run-swim-run...across the 4 lagoons.

I noticed it on active about 2 months ago, how does it work? Do you run without shoes? Is there a bike?

During the swim portion, you swim across the first lagoon and then run across sand and grass to the next lagoon and so on until you finish across all 4 lagoons. Each lagoon is between 90 and 120 yds across with anywhere from about 100 to 250 yds across grass and sand between each lagoon. Easy day. You do have to grind uphill from the water to the grass and some of that is through the sand, but its not bad. You then go into T-1 and hop on the bike. Its a regular tri from there on.

My command goes out there about once a quarter to do the lagoon swim run across all 4 lagoons and then back again (8 lagoon swims total) along with a 4 mile run. Its one of my favorite workouts here. It'll be a great race.

Wow that sounds pretty fun.  Are the sand and grass portions easy to run over without shoes.  How did everyone do on the HQBN tri on the Marine Corps base?
