Subject: Dumb question, I need a new rear tire
As a total newb on my bike (read, I lost 12mins on my first tri time because it took so long to change a flat), I realized I need a new rear tire because of the wear my trainer put on it. I know I have clinchers, but my question is, what size tire should I be buying? 700x20 or 700x23? Is there any real advantage to either?

And on the same note, can someone recommend a good all purpose tire for use on a trainer and in racing? I noticed that the thin line in the rear tire now makes my bike feel squirrely when I am on the road so thats why I am looking into this.

Thanks!

What size tire do you have now? It's probably a 23, do you have any problems with that? A 20 would give you marginally less weight and rolling resistance, at the price of a slightly rougher ride and a slightly greater propensity to flat.

I like the Michelin Pro Race, others swear by the Continental Gatorskin as good training/racing tires. The Michelin is lighter, the Conti is bulletproof.

If you rotate your tires every 500 miles or so they will wear evenly, back and front, and you'll get more life out of them.

Go with a 23. It is the most common size. I like Vredestein Fortezza (38 bucks per tire). They ride well and have been pretty tough as far as flats are concerned. You wouldn't notice any speed advantage with a 20, only a rougher ride.

I have a race set and a training set. I change out my race tires every year, that way I know my race tires only have a handfull of miles on them. After the end of the year my race tires become my training tires...Works for me anyway

Awesome, thanks for the advice. The current ones are 23 and I will stick with those.

I had thought about buying a new rear wheel just for trainer use but that costs more than a new tire , maybe after the year is up I can do that for next year.

I appreciate the feedback.

Whats the difference between a folding and a wire bead tire? One seems to be heavier and cheaper, but other than that, is there anything special about one or the other?

i run cheap specialized all condition tires for training/on the trainer. they seem to be pretty damn bulletproof.
i run michelins for race day. more $$, but a bit lighter & faster.

the difference between folding(kevlar) and non folding(wire) is just that. you can easily take the folding ones with you on your rides. i don't leave home without one (a hard lesson learned). wire is a bit heavier, but i find them easier to change, especially on the side of the road, because they hold their shape.
