Total Time = 5h 21m 41s
Overall Rank = 362/2319
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 62/330
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 04:00. Slept very little. Eat a pb&j sandwich and fixed 2 more for the bike ride.
Event warmup:

Ran to the swim start from transition. Good thing I decided to wear shoes or I would have missed my swim wave thanks to the long lines at the toilets in transition.
Swim
  • 34m 42s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 38s / 100 yards
Comments:

Point to point swim along the shore. The water was very calm. I was in the 3rd 35-39 wave group. I positioned myself in the front so there was not much contact. There was plenty of room to find an open lane to swim in until I started to catch up with the other waves. This always scares me because you run the risk if getting kicked in the face by someone doing the breast stroke. I am dissappointed with my time, I have done several open water swims preparing for this race at 32 min flat.
What would you do differently?:

Swim faster, maybe a little more open water swims leading up to the race.
Transition 1
  • 02m 49s
Comments:

Huge transition. The timing mat was a good way from the water exit.
What would you do differently?:

Run faster with my bike.
Bike

  • 21.81 mile/hr
Comments:

Long run through transition. Lots of gravel stuck to my feet. Mounted the bike and it too a while to get my feet in my shoes, but once they were in it was on. I started passing people like crazy, it felt great to be on the bike. About 15 miles in I eat a pb&j sandwich. Great to ride a closed course. Saw lots of bike marshalls, I was probably passed 10 times by them. The ride back on Haynes was tough against the wind, but the road I train on is just like it tail wind out head wind return an rough. It was cool to see the pros go by!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Transition 2
  • 02m 41s
Run
  • 2h 07m
  • 13.1 miles
  • 09m 41s  min/mile
Comments:

Legs just didn't want to go from the start. As I was running out of transition I knew I was running slower than normal. I waited for a few miles before I checked my pace and when I saw how slow it was I decided not to push it. My last mile was the same speed as my 4th, I did not slow down, but didn't speed up either. Not sure what happened here, I am normally a better runner than what my time reflects. The legs just wasn't moving as fast as they were supposed to be. Ran side by side with another guy for the last 5 miles, that sure made it easier. I ran the entire way only walking the aid stations to drink a sip of water and a sip of Gatoraide.
What would you do differently?:

Run a lot more in training. Still not sure why the legs just didn't want to go faster.
Post race
Warm down:

Met the family. Eat pizza, dran lots of water and Gatoradie and Smoothies. Saw Chris McCormack and asked him to take a picture with me and my son. Super nice guy by the way, he chatted with anyone who approched him and took pictures with any one who asked.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Should have put in more miles running. Calf started to hurt 2 weeks out so running was minimal for the last 2 weeks.

Event comments:

It was a bit hectic at the race briefing, the area was to small. Kind of sucked after the race to have to walk back over a mile to the hotel. Fist race I have done where you don't finish where you start, so that was sort of a pain also.

Thanks guys, I over estimated the run. The 4-5 mile out and back on the run was a killer. This was my second half so I still have a lot to learn about this distance.

Great job coping with the run.  Nothing wrong with staying steady in these conditions.  Long course racing is all about not slowing down.  You did a good job of that.  It was hot on the first part of that run.
