Smithfield, Virginia
United States
Set Up
55F / 13C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 18m 57s
Overall Rank = 89/181
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 13/19
Pre-race routine:

Had a sausage/egg burrito, banana, coffee. Kev got Abby ready and packed the stuff in the car and we proceeded the wrong way to the ferry. Then had to turn around. We had a rough night with the oldest and the lack of sleep was showing.
Event warmup:

When Kevin put my bike in the car he noticed that I had a flat. While I picked up my packet, chip and got marked; he changed it for me and cheked the rest of the bike out. Now I know why checking ALL your equipment the night before is best. I had rode the previous weekend, got a flat, and when I changed it I used a patched tube. STUPID!!! No real warm up because I had to get in the pool really late.
Swim
  • 07m 20s
  • 328 yards
  • 02m 14s / 100 yards
Comments:

Sure wish that I was a bit faster in the water, or just lie about my time. I didn't start till 1:37 minutes after the first person. I watched the winner start and finish even before I got to the pool. Was really happy that I finally passed someone in a pool swim and no one had to go around me.
What would you do differently?:

Try to find a way to get faster, just not sure how to do that.
Transition 1
  • 01m 56s
Comments:

Was really windy so I took time to dry off a bit and then put a windbreaker on.
What would you do differently?:

Not be such a baby in the cold.
Bike
  • 36m 45s
  • 10 miles
  • 16.33 mile/hr
Comments:

Man that was certainly the hardest bike to date. Some of the time I could bearly get any speed. Thought for a second that I could probably get off the bike and walk faster?? There was a very short stretch that I must have had a great tail wind because my speed was 24 mph and that was on a flat. Few cross wind just about put me on the ground. With all that my avg. speed wasn't to bad.
What would you do differently?:

Not much except ride a bit more outside during the winter (in the wind).
Transition 2
  • 01m 29s
What would you do differently?:

Not wear a jacket that took time to get off.
Run
  • 31m 28s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 10m 07s  min/mile
Comments:

Really thought that I would never get to the turn around. Seemed alot shorter on the way back. Heck, I even managed to pass a few runners and that almost never happens to me.
What would you do differently?:

After working so hard on the bike I'm actually very happy with my run.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

WIND!! All in all, for not alot of training through the winter I was happy with my time. My goal was to try and get under 1:15 but with the wind I was happy. Now I just need to find a way to get faster in the pool and run.

Event comments:

Set Up always puts on a good race and the bar-b-que was pretty tasty. Abby was bummmed that they ran out of mac&cheese.

Yay- you passed people!! That's always a great feeling! Looks like you had a solid race, despite being sick and the wind.  Congrats on your first race of the season :-)

Great job out there on Saturday!! You did really well and I hope it was fun, too.

And Abby wasn't the only one disappointed that they ran out of mac 'n' cheese.

Great job in tough circumstances with that wind.

I agree, pool swims are a drag when the winners are finished before you can get in the pool.
