On race morning its best to eat whatever you would normally have before an AM training session. It needs to be something that will give you some energy and that you know your body can digest/handle well.

The night before I tend to have a light meal including some protein, vegies and carbs but I know others who find a big feed of pasta etc works for them.

Im sure the nutrition experts will chime in but the best advice I have (and what works for me) is stick with what you know and what your body is accustomed to so you have no problems!

Steak and cheese burritos. Okay it's what I have for breakfast most days, in any case
Think about it, some carbs, protein, and fat. All the makings for great fuel for the day!

The night before a race I've had pizza, lasagna, pasta, fish and a curry once I think.  Personally I would say just eat whatever you are comfortable with.  As long as it is a proper meal (as opposed to junk food) then it's not really going to make that much, if any difference.  Ideally you will include a large percentage of carbohydrates.

On race morning eat whatever you usually do before a morning training session.  For me that is cereal.  I usually have an energy bar about 40 mins from the start of the race too.  Also if there is a long wait between breakfast and the start of the race then I will sip on an energy drink as well.  Whatever you do though, DON'T try anything new on race day!!!

Depends on race length for me. Shorter races (sprints/olympic) I generally eat what I normally do the night before, good dinner that is balanced with carbs/fat/protein. Morning will be what I normaly eat for breakfast, Oatmeal with milk  nuts and berries.

For HIM you need to put a bit more thought into it. Starting 2-3 days before a race I will eat a higer portion of carbs. Night before I always have a Subway sandwich (good results when I do, not so much when I don't). Morning of the race, I get up about 2.5 hours before the start and have coffee and OJ and a bagel with a good amount of peanut butter on it. and lots of water. about an hr before the start I wil have a Cliff bar and begin sipping some sports drink. generally don't have more than about 3/4 of a bottle that morning.

That's what seems to work for me.

I've been thinking about this too...

I don't normally eat breakfast in the morning before I workout.  I get up, drive half asleep to the gym/pool and make no time to eat.  So I'm a little concerned about what to eat on race day.

Of course the race starts a good 2 1/2 hrs after I'm normall at the gym (7:40am)... so I'm sure I'll have time to digest something and not feel icky.

Anything short of a HIM I don't eat anything at all for real food.

45 minutes before the start and 15 minutes before the start I'll take a Gu ROctane and wash them down with some Gu2O just to kickstart my system.

Since I'm not an early riser I limit my intake to coffee and a banana.  Then ~ 10-15 minutes before the race starts I take a gel.  For a Sprint that's probably it, for an Oly I'll take another 2 Gels during the race.  HIM is a different animal.

Have you read this handbook yet?  Some good info to understand how pre-race nutrition can be done & why.

Do you ever train in the AM? If so, do you eat beforehand? How does what you eat/don't eat affect your training?

I eat oatmeal when I get up (usually about 3.5 hrs before race start). I also have white bread with jelly at some point before the race. May or may not have a little bit of banana...depends on the day. I wouldn't recommend eating banana before your race, though, unless you've tried it before in training.

Ok, how about us that NEVER train in the morning.  I'm set, if they ever have a tri that start's at 8 p.m. though.    I guess I should never say never either.  I'm about to hop on the trainer for a ridiculous amount of time because the weather stinks.

Coffee and Oatmeal (Ralston Brand, Brown sugar and maple flavor)  and or Baker Breakfast Cookie.

Keep it simple and nothing new/ nothing that you haven't tried before.   Don't want to be a couple miles into a race and having to start looking for a bathroom......

OMG that makes my stomach turn just thinking about it.  No way I could eat something that heavy before a race.  I could however eat a scrambled egg breakfast burrito with about a tablespoon of shredded cheese.

The Vineman Showdown starts at 2:30pm. Is that good enough?
