Sal...I just remembered the story about the muskie. I now scan the water for fish which always freaks me out a bit. I would like to keep all my toes and not end up on the evening news.

Any lakes have buoys up yet?  I was thinking about driving over to Square Lake, but if there's a lake in the metro that has buoys up already that isn't disgusting with algae (Phalen), that would be even better.

It's a haul, but I saw buoys and swimmers at the lake in Baker Park Reserve this morning.  I'm going to Nokomis on Thursday evening around 5, if you want to join my friend and me.   I haven't even checked, but I would have assumed all  metro lakes would have the swim areas marked off now that we're a week past Memorial Day.

All the Washington County parks should have the swim areas open.

Yesterday, I swam at Big Marine Park Reserve which is North West of Square Lake. It was tolerable... Would have been good if the wind wasn't so strong.

I had considered trying to swim at Moore Lake near the Fridley Lifetime, but the swim area doesn't open till sometime in June.

On Sunday afternoon I swam at Nokomis. There were no buoys in the water yet and there was no lifeguard but there were a decent number of people in the water. I hope the buoys go in the water soon. Tried to find the date the beaches "officially" open somewhere on the web and couldn't. The water is warm, go swimming!

This document seems to imply that beaches in Minneapolis open on June 13. Be careful to follow the rules, kids - people have been busted before.

sincerely,
your mom

I'm not sure that lifeguard hours equates beach hours.  I believe beach hours are greater than lifeguard hours in most cases.  I could have sworn the Minneapolis beaches opened on or the day after Memorial Day, but I also cannot find confirmation of that on the Park and Rec site.  Stupidheads.

Good point.

That Minneapolis Park & Rec website is complex and comprehensive, yet they appear to have missed some pretty key information in this regard.

Good thing I live too far away and care too little about swimming for it to affect me much.Tongue out

That's funny

All this talk reminded me to get my pass for Shady Oak Lake.  Only $12 for Minnetonka and Hopkins residents.  Pretty good deal for a nice, safe beach with facilities and whatever.  It's $5 for a day pass, so I am more than satisfied with the price and it's a short easy bike ride from my house. Yay!  Now just to remember to go...

Emily, are you still planning on a swim at Nokomis after work?  I've got my wetsuit in the trunk.  Need to get an OWS in before Liberty.

Yes, I will be there.  Planning a run first, though.  I imagine we'll be getting in the water around 6:00, but I am not sure.  I'll be either in/or running around the lake.  Arriving around 5.

Emily, great to see you today.  Hope your swim went just as well.  Good luck this weekend!

Anyone who swims in Nokomis have any idea how far it is from end buoy to end buoy?  My ows are for time but I'm just curious how far I go.

Hey guys, I was hoping to head down to Lake Nokomis sometime this week to get a swim in as I have never swam there before and am doing the lifetime tri. I was wondering if anyone can tell me how it is, any rules on where and when to swim, and conditions or now that I am rambling on please just tell me anything and anything that you might know about Nokomis that I might find useful. Thanks, I would be able to get down there towards the end of the week and the mornings are ideal, if that makes any difference.

Last year I did the Garmin in the plastic bag deal and ended up with 110 yds.  I think they're closer to 100 yds this year...don't think it's 110, I don't swim that fast in open water...

Right around this time of the year, you'll have a LOT of triathletes swimming early in the morning.  Most swim just outside the buoys.  No lifeguards present in the morning.

After work is crowded.  Lifeguards are present and they call you in out of the water during lifeguard breaks which is a pain trying to time your swim workout.  If you mention to them you'll be swimming laps just outside the buoys they don't seem to have a problem with it.

I'll be doing Lifetime again this year.  I'll let you know when I can get some OWSs in.  Usually in the morning 5:30 to 6:30.

Ok, yeah, that sounds about right, thanks!  I tried to guestimate using google maps, but they took the pic before or after the buoys were in.

I've actually done swims there at lunchtime (we have shower facilities at corp gym).  Sandy and shallow on east end.  Changing rooms on beach.  No lifeguard at beach, but buoys set out to designate swim area.

Did cancel one swim.  Swimmer's itch sign posted on beach early summer.  Frown

I had high hopes for this beach last year since it's the closest OWS to my house.  However, it seems to be a very shallow area.  I had to get 100+ yards out from shore to get deep enough to swim.

Ditto on the swimmer's itch.  I came out with a gnarly case of it last year at this beach.

I'm looking forward to checking out Shady Oak Lake in the Spring though.

I frequently swim "laps" at Shady Oak Lake. I live on the west side of the lake, right across the street, and my backyard is on the trail. If people wanted to do something fun, we could do a few "across and back" laps from the beach to the trail and back after-hours this summer.

I could bring a kayak down from the cabin and play lifeguard for a group.

Are you swimming laps on "off" hours (mornings on weekends, evening time when the bats start swooping etc...) or when a lifeguard is around at the beach during the days and "express official concern"?

The last thing I need is to take a swim at Septic Beach on Dog Turd lake in Minneapolis only to receive a citation for sending a snot rocket into the weeds.

This made me laugh.

Well it looks like next week will be warming up some, and hopefully staying that way.  I am thinking a bit ahead, but would there be any interest in getting some people together for an OWS Memorial Day weekend, either Sunday or Monday at some point if the lakes warm up a bit more.  I would like to get out once before my first race the following weekend.
