Pre-race routine:

Got up EARLY, some cereal, hydration, runnign gear set up the night before, drove to the end point, got a bus down to the start.
Event warmup:

Not really, some walking and light streching, way, way too many people to even move around.
Run
  • 1h 07m 49s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 10m 55s  min/mile
Comments:

I have never run with 17K+ people, it was very hard navigating thru the walkers and slow runners, the first half was run at less than I am capable, but I was there to have fun, as it was my birthday!

I love all the folks in their costumes and the jazz band was fabulous!

It's funny, my Garmin showed the exact same distance but has me going a few minutes faster?
What would you do differently?:

Figure out how to better run with so many people, or limit running in such huge races.
Post race
Warm down:

The finish line was jammed and I had to walk befor getting to it due to so much congestion. It took a long time to find water, some food and Gatorade and I think that helped to contribuet to a terrible migrain I got on my way home later.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Other runners/walkers, lack of experience in navigating large crowds.

Event comments:

Better crowd control was needed for so many runners, especially at the finish.

I will do this race again as I really did have a lot of fun dispite there being soooo many people!

Good job on your race Jen

Running with over 17k people must be something really special. But I agree that you need some really good dodging skills to go throught them all.

Good job on your 10k. Those big races can be a lot of fun if you don't let them stress you out. I used to run the National Race for the Cure in Washington, DC, and they had something like 60,000 runners and walkers for a 5k. Totally nuts, but a fantastic time.

Happy Birthday, too!

Congratulations! It sounds like you did have a good time! My whole town doesn't even have that many people in it!

Great job, Jen!  Nothing like a race with 17,000 other people to celebrate your birthday!

I always have fun in the big races, but I know they aren't going to be my best times.  It's a totally different mindset for those.
