Subject: Trainer Question

I just got my first trainer and I have always heard that you should either use old tires or a trainer tire while you ride on the trainer to save your regular tires.  Do most people do this by changing out the tire on their existing rear wheel before every ride?  Or do they usually have an old rear wheel and cassete that they only use with the trainer?  If this is the better option does anybody have any ideas where I can find a cheap rear wheel and cassete?  Thanks for your help.

I have a wheel that I use only for the trainer.  I bought the wheel from an LBS and had them put on an old cassette that I had.  Call around to your LBSs and see if they might have a used wheel that they could sell.  They might also have a used cassette that matches yours.  I have found that switching out the wheel between trainer and road rides is easiest.

It's hard enough wanting to do a trainer ride. I wouldn't want to make it even more ghastly by having to swap parts first, so I just use the same setup I use outdoors (Gatorskins). I do clean off the tire beforehand or it will slip.

Plus I don't own spare wheel anyway, and by the time I owned a spare wheel plus trainer tire plus cassette that would erase much cost benefit of reduced wear on my road tire. And the hassle factor of switching out tire itself is prohibitive.

It might make sense for me if I were setting up the bike on the trainer "for winter" or some such, rather than using it both indoors and outdoors.

What does the trainer do to your wheel so you want to use an old one?

Lay a white towel down under the trainer and use a normal wheel. After about an hour, check out all the flakes and specks of rubber on the towel. A dedicated trainer tire is made to be able to withstand the heat and an old tire doesn't matter near that much that you're ripping it up because you're probably not going to use it outside anyway.

With the right tire pressure and pressure from the trainer you shouldn't have to much abnormal wear (I learned from my mistake) but it does wear out faster than on the road and wears the tire different than on the road. I use a POS wheel and old tires as many others have said. But if you don't have that option than don't change anything out, but you'll just have to replace the tire sooner than normal.

Also be sure to release the tension after riding the trainer. I forgot to one time and it caused my POS wheel to become way out of wack.
