Subject: X-Lab Superwing Users, I have a question.

So I have the Superwing on my Quintana Roo, it's the one that attaches to the seat rails.  I bought some cheap cages for it because I figured a cage is a cage.  Now the damn thing shoots off water bottles like it's going out of style.  I have the wing mounted straight out behind the seat with the cages set vertically.  Is this something that's common with the XLAB, is it because of the way I have it mounted, or is it because of cheap cages?

Thanks.

I've busted 2 via crashes or legs catching them so cheap is good. But for the metal ones just bend em tighter.

I had same problem. Used the Xlab bottle holders at first ( paid €14 each!!) and bottles launched regularly. Then one of the cages shot off with the bottle and by the time I noticed I was well gone. THe nuts had nylon inserts to avoid vibrating loose but...
I Found it on my next lap flattened by a car wheel.
I then swopped to a metal type grip cage having tried a few types in the shop hoping to get the tightest fitting version. I tightened the living daylights out of the mount and squeezed the cage in to make sure it gripped well. Mid way through an IM last week I reached behind to find one cage missing...... THis time the cage parted from its mount, the weld had broken!
Clearly this type of arrangement sees a lot of vibration.
I noticed others at the race had tape and elastics holding in bottles but this kinda defeats the purpose inmy view.
Its a handy place to have your bottles and kit but cages need to be robust and very 'grippy'. I think I will revert to the old heavy rod type cage.

The superwing, has a bunch of different holes for the water bottle cages that allow you to change the orientation. You can try and make sure your bottle are reasonably upright and not facing backwards.

Also, I've been using these on my wing:

They're cheap, durable, and have a rubber band that seems to hold the bottle in really snug. I haven't had any launching what so ever.

I have the xlab sonic wing and I use the gorilla cages that came with it. I have never had a bottle launch. The cages are pretty grippy.

I've got the X Lab Carbon Wing and the carbon cages (yes $$$$$).  The bottle cages have a flange that points inward that catches the shoulder of the bottle and I've never had a bottle launch.

Does a rubber band around the bottle work to keep it secure? I know that'll make it really hard to take out of the cage, but I generally only use my downtube bottle on the ride, and just keep the back ones for swapping out on long rides.

My Super Wing with metal cages (that have securing rubber tabs) will also eject bottles like crazy if I hit bumps. Usually takes about 4-5 good hits. I find myself always resecuring the bottle by reaching back after a big bump. Kind of annoying, I agree.

X2 ... I have this water bottle holder - it's super cheap, light, and I'm yet to launch a bottle.  It's a little tricky getting it onto the X-lab unit, but with a little paitence you'll get her on there.
