Subject: Aerobars for my Road Bike?
Im thinking of putting aerobars on my Specialized Tarmac road bike (bought in 2007). Im wondering, when I am in the aero position will I be uncomfortable becasue my seat is not forward enough? Im looking to spend around $200-$500ish, does anyone have any suggestions? or general tips for what to look for when I buy them?

Thanks

slowly move your seat foward, and raise to keep the same distance away from the bottom bracket.  Then get some clip-ons.

xcrunner2010, are you saying that you can make your road bike somewhat into a tri bike by getting aero bars and changing the seat position? I already have the clipless.

I think he (she?) means clip-on aero bars.  As opposed to a full-on aero cockpit.  Lots of brands out there.  I currently have Syntace on mine, but I also have had several variations of Profile clip-ons.  I love the Syntace for the light weight, but my last set of Profiles had the pads on a hinge that flipped up when not in the aero position so I could also sit up and ride with my hands on the top of the handlebars.

I'm selling a pair of carbon clip on aerobars in the classified section for much less than your 200$-500$ price range. Clip on's and a fast forward seatpost would probably be your best option at getting into an aero position on a road bike.

you can also try turning your seat post around and moving your seat forward. that should give you a lot more forward position.

How long are you planning on spending in the aero position?  The entire ride or just part of it?  I recently put a pair of the Vision mini-TTs on my road bike and have only gone on a couple of rides with them, but I can hang out for 20 mile ride and be in the position about 90% of the time.  I haven't moved my seat at all, and I know based on posts here I should, but I still want to have the drops and hood be comfortable for me...since it is a road bike afterall.  I'm just looking to cut through some wind where I can for the most part.

Some clip-ons are better for road bikes then others.  I actually like the look of the profile design jammers for a roadie, but my purchase was spontaneous at a shop the day before a ride I wanted them for so just took what I could....They are a little on the short end for my liking, but they get the job done.  If I start going for 40 and 50 mile rides, I'll definitely want to make adjustments.
