Age Group Rank = 10/13
Pre-race routine:

The night before I decided to practice changing tires by putting on my brand new ProRace 3s. Big mistake - I had 2 flat tires the next morning. I pinched both tubes. Thank goodness for my hubby - he changed both and helped me get my stuff in order.

Because this race started so late I had to eat a lot more so it was not my normal race breakfast but it worked out fine.
Event warmup:

I got the wetsuit on and got in the water to see how cold it was. It wasn't that bad.
Swim
  • 43m 8s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 52s / 100 meters
Comments:

Well what can I say. I know I'm bad at swimming and a wetsuit doesn't make much difference except I know that I won't drown. I did ok and was only 2 min. off my bottom time goal but I had a terrible time after the last turn sighting. My poor eyesight is a problem and I spotted off the wrong things. There were orange buoys to swim by and when I made the last turn I saw something orange. It turned out to be a kayak. So I got way off course and never really recovered missing both buoys and having to swim back to them. Then I went to the wrong side of the dock.
What would you do differently?:

Lots - I need to get faster in the water and work on sighting. I'm going to try some goggles to help me see better.
Transition 1
  • 03m 42s
Comments:

I came out of the water ok and I was very close to the swim exit (first rack). I sat on the ground to get the wetsuit off. I had to keep my body relaxed to prevent some cramping. Struggled a bit to get the suit over my ankles and get my socks on.
What would you do differently?:

Stop worrying about what has happened and focus on the next portion of the race. I had almost given up before the better parts of my race.
Bike
  • 1h 24m 5s
  • 24 miles
  • 17.13 mile/hr
Comments:

Not my best effort - I was about 2 min. off my bottom goal - 17 instead of 18mph. I died on the hills. Not that I physically struggled but could not carry speed up them. I was also not having positive thoughts. I was upset w/ myself and lack of performing so I just couldn't give it my all.
What would you do differently?:

Try to power up hills better and work on aero position.
Transition 2
  • 02m 19s
Comments:

Did ok - it kind of sucks when the bike in/out is the farthest thing from your rack. I could not have been further away so it leaves lots of running w/ the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Not much
Run
  • 1h 05m 39s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 10m 34s  min/mile
Comments:

I jogged my way through the run - walked through all the water stations, ate my sports beans and thought about all the things that didn't go well during the race and the day. Pretty pathetic. HR stayed in the Zone 2 so I wasn't putting much effort into the run.
What would you do differently?:

Run harder and stop feeling sorry for myself
Post race
Warm down:

Waded back into the lake to wash and cool off. It felt great.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My lack of swim ability and my head - keep negative thoughts out of your head I should have given myself a smack in T1 and said get it together. LOL

Event comments:

The race is well run and organized. The shirt was cool but they really don't give much else with these races.

Sounds like it was a rough weekend for a few of us! Way to stick it out, though. Was good to chat with Tony for a bit while spectating. I have the same problem as you. I don't completely die on the hills, but they eat a lot of my energy, which over time, weakens me in general.

And yeah, that run course sucked...

You've got to set your mind to singing some annoying song over and over so it can't come up with negative thoughts!

Good job hanging in there and finishing despite the early difficulties.

It's one step closer to your goal this year, so it still was a good race.

Sorry you had such a poopy mental race. Keep your chin up.  Next time, think of all the jokes we have at Tony's expense in our mentor group. That should put a smile on your face
