Going camping this weekend and will be taking the bike to Payson.  If I can sneak away I will ride trail 260 for a bit.  Need to get more points.  But I got to get back on my tribike, she is calling me out...

I was thinking the same thing about the tri bike!  I got done with a 2+ hour MTB ride this morning and saw the tri bike when I got home looking o so sexeh and fast!!!  I might have to get some miles on it this weekend...

I rode from Blue Daimond to Badger pass today.  Almost 17 miles and 1800 vert of climbing according to the garmin.

Go Bill!

Everyone is doing great with the challenge points. I'll update this week on Tues to give everyone enough time to log the Memorial Day weekend rides.

Zac and I will be using our Monday off to go try out some trails we've never ridden before.

Good job Bill...  lots of riding,,,

Nice morning to Mtn bike.  Went to BJC for the Xterra trial.  Rode the trial 30 min faster than I have ever did,  Its a PR.  Dont know why.....

Trial was long and sandy but after the rain is was really easy riding

6 Pts for me this week.

total 28pts

Im leaving for El Paso this week and dont see myself riding until I get back on the 5th,,,,, so Im done with only 28 pts...  That was fun...

We checked out Brown County State Park in Nashville, Indiana this weekend.  Nice rental bikes from Bike Garage Indy (if you're ever in the area).  Erik got a Trek Fuel EX 8 and I had a Giant Trance x2.

Hills: B

Technical:C/B - It wasn't terribly technically but there were some places you (I) had to get off to do log crossings...some sweet little wood bridges and some rock garden areas

Time: A

The trails are set up in a figure-8/loop pattern.  So you take this out & back to a Y and you can take the long easy or the short easy to the next Y which then gives you a long moderate or a short moderate to the point that the most difficult starts.  At that point it is an out/back to Hesitation Point.  Going out we always took the left (the longer loop) and then coming back I went right (the straight/short way).

It was a fun trip, I've got pictures up in my picasa: http://picasaweb.google.com/kmanus

Bah...

Finally got my arse over to Bootleg Canyon.  It was every bit as techinical as rumored...  Not fun, really...  (well, everything but the down hill!  That was cool...)

Worst of it is, I took a low speed spill when I daydreamed for a second and lost focus.  I tweaked the left shoulder pretty bad, did the usualy abuse to the legs, but even worse, bent my front wheel pretty bad.  I didn't notice till I got back to the car, but it's probably 3/4 inch out of true.

I need to get it fixed (unlikely) or get a new front wheel (most likely).

More info in in my logs...

However, it was worth 8 points....

I was checking on the bike again late last night and found some odd movement in the head set.  The fork is loose and can be wiggled back and forth a bit.

I stayed up most of the night worrying about if I did some serious damage.  I'm hoping that the headset just needs to be tightened, and that's it.  Frame damage on a bike less than 30 days old would SUCK!!!

I'm taking it in to the LBS in about an hour to see if they can fix the wheel and more importantly, the headset...

Wish me luck...

Sounds like fun - I love riding in new areas with nice rental bikes to dream about

Speaking of which - I am upgrading to full suspension.  This hardtail stuff is killing me.  I feel like I am in a fight every day when I finish up a long trail ride.  Now I have to figure out the budget, how much I can get for the Felt, and which ride to snag.  Would love to go custom but I don't see that happening

Great rides all weekend everyone!

Not sure of your budget.  But the Giant Trace X 2 just won a shootout in MBA.  It comes in at VERY affordable $2700 and is XT... 5" of travel...  I'm likeing that if I wanted to add another 26" bike to the stable and not brake the bank.

The Santa Cruz Blur is traditionally a top FS ride...

I'll be up in Show Low this weekend for the XTERRA, so I'll be offline until Wed (hoping to get online at a campground). So I won't be able to update the final points until then. Or if someone wants to go through all the logs and update earlier, that is fine too.

Everyone is doing really awesome in this challenge! I wanted to give everyone a big Thank You for participating and being all-around cool. I was reading some of the drama in the swim challenge, and let's just say, too much chlorine appears to have some bad effects. Dirt does a body good.

Bike Question Time:  So I am dreaming here but I found a 29'er GF Hi-Fi Deluxe and a 26" Trek Fuel (Better wheel set and SRAM x0 - with a 500 discount) at the same price point.

Both are full suspension and componentry is fairly equivalent.

I enjoy my 29er Hard Tail so that does not bother me going to 29 again.  The Trek is a little higher end in the wheelset but only 26"

What are people's thoughts?  Thanks in advance.

After racing a 29er I don't think I could ever go back to a 26" again. Unless it was an all mountain or down hill bike. But for XC, you gotta go 29er.

I have the '09 GF Paragon. I just run the gearing with what it came with. Geared bikes have way too many gears as it is.

Sweet bike.  I am looking at the Hi-Fi (same bike but full suspension).  These East Coast trails are murder on the hardtails!

I agree with the too many gears but I commute to the trails on it and want to find something that works both on smooth surface where I can get some speed up and also low enough for big climbs in the future.

Thanks for the info!

Well just to give you some perspective. My last race had some good down hill sections where I was in the big chain ring. My max speed on my computer was 25.4mph and I could have still pedaled. Also, I rarely use the small chain ring unless it is a long steep climb. Even then I prefer to jump off and run up. The lowest gear is so low that it is hard to even stay balanced you are going so slow.
The Hi-Fi should be a sweet bike. I always had something against Gary Fisher bikes, kind of like how I hate to by Nike shoes. But now that I own a Fisher, I love it.

I love my 29er.  But you are right, it left me a little 'wanting' when I went to the All MTN/downhill park this last weekend.  Hence the bent wheel, derailleur, and loose headset...

I would like to get a 26" all mtn ride next...  but for the time being, I plan to stick to my XC routes and stay out of the all mtn park.

BTW, my LBS is GREAT!!!  Fixed everything (except the wheel) for 20 bucks.  I threw $10 more for a couple beers for helping me out.  They got the wheel ridable, but I ended up ordering new rims.  They will rebuild using stock hubs once the get in...

I was SERIOUSLY thinking about the HI FI delux 29er but ended up with the Specialized FS 29er.  (I got a REALLY good deal as Specialized was giving money back for purchases).

However, the research I found is that people were having some issues with the GF frames.  however these were bigger guys like me (220 lbs).  If that's not you, then it's probably fine.

That trek is a nice bike though.  I think you are good to go on both of them.

Agreed.  In the years I have been riding, I have never messed with my mtb gearing.  Road?  Yes, a lot.  But not mtn biking..

I seriously think they should come out with a double crank.  Unless I'm on the pavement, I'm never in the big ring.  It's middle and small for almost all my rides.

It would also save my right calf!  I currently have about 13 puncture wounds due to the big rings smashing into my leg...

Just a few more days of riding before we wrap it up!!!

I may be done, though.  Bike issues, car issues, etc...  It could be tough to get dirty the next three days.  Well maybe just ONE ride!!!

Got the longest ride in for the month yesterday.  Nice way to finish off May.

Almost 2.5 hours worth...

So 8 points to wrap up the month.  This challange was fun!

I think I will have to hang up the MTB for a couple weeks.  I have to get ready for Alcatraz, and I need some pavement time.  However, I think all the MTN biking really helped with biking fitness.  I should really crush the bike portion at the race now...
