10,000 in one workout. 20,000 in one day (triple). My age group coach was old school crazy!

Now I usually go 10-15,000 yards per week, but I'll through in a 5,500 to 6,000 day about every other week now since I am doing 5K and 10K races this summer.

7500 with another 3000 that night so 10,500 in one day.  gotta love age group swimming... these days I'm happy with 3000+ and then I want to poke my eyes out!

After a long swim, the part that really hurts is taking the goggles off. It feels as though the suction is going to suck your eyeballs out.

10,000 in one day, back in the day.  25 years later average is 3000-3500, targeting 10k weekly.

Now, if I could just get my running and biking time up  proportionately...

Back in HS (30+ years ago), over 5000 yds was longest...don't remember anything more specific than that.

Since starting tri training two years ago:  4000 yds continuous swim last weekend actually was longest.  Also did a 2+ mile pool swim back in December.

I generally only swim twice a week; one session is usually intervals (before work) and is 1200-1600 yds, the other is usually endurance, 2000-4000 yds.  Most weeks these days I do about 4000-4500 yds.

LostSheep - 2009-04-21 4:42 PM Man, lots of you have me considering trading in some of my swim time for more biking/running time. Almost like I'm over doing it...

...especially since my longest of the year is merely an Oly!
I was expecting to see longer swim sets as well. I've only cracked 10K in a week once, but was thinking about making that (10K) my regular week. Very interesting. I guess it quickly becomes an intensity vs distance debate.

What the debate becomes is more about swimming experience vs lack there of... Or more importantly the distance race you are training for.  Most folks on here are not "swimmers" and undertain the swim in both distance and frequency.  Most just do the bare minimum to get by.  Probably because they will see larger gains on the bike or run with more effort spent there.

With that said....

My longest swim straight was today since I started training and racing 4 year ago.  2000 yards.  Prior to that maybe 1500 yards all done in a warm up only.  Nothing hard.  So I almost don't even want to call it anything more than just "a warm up."  My longest workouts for 70.3 distance typically fall in the 4000-5000 yard range.  Most of the work outs will average about 3500-4000 once I am really in the middle of some big weeks.   But almost all of my main sets are equal to the distance I am racing but broken up into intervals.

Swimming 4 times a week.  Typically in the ball park of 15K per week.  Which I consider moderate.  But I come from a swim backgound and don't feel the need to spend all of my time there...

dpeeples - 2009-04-21 2:43 PM Two questions: What is the longest swim work out (in distance) that you have ever done? What is the longest swim work out that you do in an average training week?

1. 10k yards

2. Depends on what I'm training for.  But 3-4k is probably pretty typical.

Something like 4000yds training for my IM. Right now I'm doing around 1000 3x per week but the season is early

I'm a newb, have yet to compete in my first one, but my longest swim so far is 3100(I had a 1500 in there) yards, average around 2500 (If I get in a full hour or so).  Several of the local Xterras are only .75 miles, so I'm not sure how much more of a distance I'll go up, since 80 minutes seems to be plenty of time to prepare for a 25 (at my pace) minute swim.
