Overall Rank = 385/404
Age Group = 50-54
Age Group Rank = 16/17
Pre-race routine:

Woke up about 6 am and started mixing my sports drinks. Had my usual protein shake for breakfast and then later started on a banana.

I got into my wet suit too soon and was roasting.
Event warmup:

I swam around in the water for the 30 minutes before my wave went.
Swim
  • 20m
  • 880 yards
  • 02m 16s / 100 yards
Comments:

I surprised myself by actually passing people early in the swim. I also managed to draft for a while before I ended up passing that person too. I ended up out of the water well before I thought I would with about a dozen people behind me. I expected to be in that position, but I expected it to take about 10 minutes longer.
What would you do differently?:

I did swim a bit wide on the first leg of the triangle, but not too bad. All-in-all, I did so much better than I expected that I wouldn't do anything differently.
Transition 1
  • 03m
Comments:

I had trouble getting out of my left arm because my HRM watch was over my suit. My feet got stuck a bit in the suit, but not any worse than usual. I didn't even attempt to jump on the bike -- that's way above my ability level right now. I made up time on competitors who swam better than I did in T1.
What would you do differently?:

Put the HRM watch on before the wet suit.
Bike
  • 50m
  • 13 miles
  • 15.60 mile/hr
Comments:

I love this course! I guess it suited me. On the first part of the first lap, I felt at one with my bike and was passing people like crazy. We never got our split times and I'm bad about looking at my watch, but I think I was slightly faster than normal.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Transition 2
  • 02m
Comments:

I did okay on this transition. I could have been faster but I will made up time on better racers than I am.
What would you do differently?:

Not try to eat anything. Put on sunscreen on my face.
Run
  • 1h 00m 59s
  • 4 miles
  • 15m 14s  min/mile
Comments:

I thought the sun was going to roast my face off. I was annoyed that I couldn't make up any time on the downhills because they were so steep I had to walk them. I did twist my ankle at one point, but luckily not bad enough to impact my performance.

I did actually pass two people and was hardly passed by anyone. I was not expecting that as my running is my weakest segment.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and drank like crazy.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The heat and the steepness of the trails.

Event comments:

It was my first tri so I don't have anything but a 5K to compare it too. It was pretty laid back in parts, which was nice in some ways, but led to me not getting a race t-shirt in my size and athletes getting in the way of racers in transition. There were not enough aid stations for the weather on the run.

Split times were never given to us so I had to estimate my time in each section. The Overall results are up but the Division results are not so I had to manually calculate my age group rank.

I thought about doing this race, but the name alone intimidated me!  It didn't sound like the cold was too much of a factor though.  Thanks for sharing!  I may have to do this one next year!
