Pre-race routine:

Got up at 4am and got ready at the house. Did a protein drink and made a pbj for the road. Stopped at a quik trip and used the bathroom and got a banana.
Event warmup:

Jogged a little be and did a very short swim to test out the wetsuit.
Swim
  • 15m 22s
  • 600 meters
  • 02m 34s / 100 meters
Comments:

Overall pleased with the first performance with the wetsuit. Heart rate was too high when I got out so the opening of the bike leg suffered.
What would you do differently?:

Go slower and more steady so the HR would stay down. I believe my overall performance would have been close to the same and I would have done better on the bike.
Transition 1
  • 01m 47s
Comments:

The transition area was very crowded and navigating it was difficult. I did try riding on top of my shoes out of T1 but it was pretty up hill so I didn't really get much benefit from improved speed. Maybe on a different course it would more effective.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe put the shoes on first.
Bike
  • 46m 21s
  • 11.2 miles
  • 14.50 mile/hr
Comments:

My training this year has shown me that his is a definite liability and my average speed has been difficult to get back up to 14 mph. This was the fastest ride for me this year. I've got to incorporate some intervals and hills into my rides and not just spin for long low intensity rides.
What would you do differently?:

Get on my road bike sooner. Hopefully the weather will cooperate this spring and summer.
Transition 2
  • 02m 16s
Comments:

I sat down to put socks on and lace up my shoes. I had not yet put yankz on this set of running shoes and did not want to ruin a good new set of shoes by bleeding on them. I didn't get my shoes tied quite as well as I would have like and kept thinking I was going to have to stop and do them over again.
What would you do differently?:

Use my shoes with yankz and not have to lace them.
Run
  • 41m 54s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 13m 31s  min/mile
Comments:

I was hoping for a sub 40 minute time so I was very disappointed but based on the course it wasn't a realistic goal. I do have to start running outside on a more challenging course and limit my treadmilling to raining days and zone 1-2 runs.

The good news is that this was still a PR by 2+ minutes.
What would you do differently?:

Spend more time with hills and do more strength training for challenging runs.
Post race
Warm down:

Drank some water and went back down to thank my NAMC buddies. Without the help of Greg and Jonathan, the time would have definitely been slower but they help to push and motivate us to keep going.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

A little sore in the legs on the first part of the run and then just being overwhelmed by the steepness of the course.

Event comments:

First time to do this race and will probably keep it in the rotation now that I know what to expect.

Performance: Good
My swim was actually a little shorter but the swim time ended when you entered the T1. That was a good little jog up to that area so it definitely affects my time more. My first swim in the suit was great! I did the first buoy in less than 2 minutes and I never break the 2 minute mark in the pool. The second half of the swim was harder to sight due to a pretty bright sun shining down on the lake.

Performance: Average
The first part of the course was difficult for me but as my HR came down and the hills became less steep, my ride started to settle in. Overall I was pleased with the performance. The average speed wasn't as high as my best race but it was an easy 2nd. With time on the bike this spring and summer it will be back up where it needs to be.
Wind: None
Course: Rolling hills and a couple long but not steep climbs. Most of the climbs were not steep enough for me to get out of the seat but many of them brought my speed down into the sub 10mph area.

Course: The first portion of the run was so fun and easy I though I was going to break 36 minutes. After the .75 mark it turned and headed up what was to be the first of way too many hills. I just don't have as much training on inclines and hills so it just wore me out. I did get stronger as the run went on but it was too late to salvage what I was hoping for.

Great job in these conditions. Not only was that course sneaky hilly, but for us to all of a sudden have heat to deal with for a race made for an interesting day.
Nice job for your first time in the wetsuit...it definitely is different.
Keep it up this season!

Congrats on a great race...what is great about the first race is you learn where you are at in training for all the other races.  You are on the way to a great season of racing.

Good job Bill, good to see you PR.  To me, that is all anyone could ask for.  It thought the run course was tough too after that first flat part.  Good job on your swim.  It was good seeing you.

Great run PR, Bill!  I don't think that you have to do the flying mount to be fast in transition.  I'm much happier running in my shoes and then hopping on the bike - way less likely to crash and it's easier to get up to speed with your feet securely in the shoes.

On your run, if you don't want to use yankz, you can also just loosen your laces a little so that you can ram your feet into the shoes really fast.

Great job Bill! One thing that impressed me is you maintained on those last few hills when it would have been easier to walk like everyone else was! Great job finishing strong!

Agree with everyone else.  You did a great job not only with the entire race but your entire weekend.  You give back a lot to the sport and I admire that.

A PR is a PR... just think how far you've come!  Great job out there, Bill.  You have a great attitude and J22 took the words right out of my mouth (errrr... fingers?!)... you give back to the sport in so many ways whether it's volunteering or pictures or words of encouragement.  Congrats on the season's first race.  Looking forward to seeing how the rest of your season unfolds.
