Sunny
Total Time = 2h 39m 28s
Overall Rank = /
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 22/39
Pre-race routine:

worked finish line/med tent on Saturday for 8 hrs (hour break in the middle). forgot to eat, and almost forgot to drink for the whole time. (so, yogurt at 7am then dinner at 6!!) I know...dork!
Got up this am, yogurt, diet pepsi, gatorade. Already hot by my start time of 8:55. Felt pretty good!
Event warmup:

2 5-7 minute runs, about 15 min apart. easy pace with some strides @ about 5k pace thrown in on the second run. No bike warm up. Good overall stretching at start line.
Run
  • 50m 51s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 11s  min/mile
Comments:

went out too fast for 1st couple of miles. (huge downhill at start, kinda set the pace for a bit) pack of about 12-15 were ruling the race by 10 minutes in. (I was NOT part of it...strictly middle of pack whole race). Got this weird abd "cramp?" that I get sometimes by 1/2 mile, and finally got it to release while pressing in on my abd while running. Went away around mile 5. Area feels bruised now when pushed on. (I know, "then don't push on it!)
What would you do differently?:

not be on feet all day the day before, and remember to eat and drink day before. Got great night of sleep last night though!! (Not sure how much this even affected me, truthfully) Not get the cramp (think it is adhesion related from my c-section)
NOT get the agd "cramp"!! (did not slow me down much this time!)
Transition 1
  • 01m 11s
Comments:

just could NOT clip in at mount line!! Has never happened before!
What would you do differently?:

not much, clip in as is the norm??
Bike
  • 1h 21m 45s
  • 24 miles
  • 17.61 mile/hr
Comments:

dropped my chain starting 3rd loop! It got major wedged in between the sprocket and frame. Had actually been conscious of the whole easy gear on back, and hard on front when dropping from high to easy gearing on front. But, dorked out and did exactly that!! The Brightroom guy Mike, yelled "hey Pam, saw that technical!) I talked to him after, and hoped he got a pic of it. Most people get pissed about that, he said, and didn't realize it was me until he saw my bike after I re mounted! I would have loved that in my pics! Makes it real! Really fun course, not esp fast do to couple of good, and many small hills on each loop. The wind felt great though after the scorching run! Gelled at beginning of bike, and at 1:15 of bike.
What would you do differently?:

NOT DROP MY CHAIN!! Push a "little" harder, though I was remembering the heat on the run, and didn't want to blow up. (way too many in the med tent yesterday that did just that, for the off road Nats.) (really off my "usual" race pace)
Transition 2
  • 01m 20s
Comments:

made sure to gulp some Gatorade in T2, and decided to take my half frozen bottle with me.
What would you do differently?:

not much, pretty ok with it.
Run
  • 24m 23s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 50s  min/mile
Comments:

soooo glad I took my Gatorade with me! Frequent sipping ice cold (till the last mile...) really helped. Used the water stations (2 I think, was only supposed to be 1) to pour the water on my head and body, also very necessary. Struggled with the hills, had to walk up some, barely more than a jog at the finish line. (big grassy hill leading up to finishing chute)
What would you do differently?:

In this heat, can't say anything would have helped.
Post race
Warm down:

into med tent to lie down for 15 minutes, dizzy at finish, would rather lie down than pass out! Foot cramped up bad in there, Steve massaged it out for me! Off to shower, then back to work med tent for rest of day.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

again HOT HOT HOT!

Event comments:

poor course support on bike, ability to cheat (intentionally or accidently) by not completing 3 loops. No water bottle exchange on bike, carpets covering expansion joints on the biggest bridge (great that they did this) blew all over, and were hard to get around on my third loop.

Overall, great experience (lots of rocket fast athletes...), LOVED the fun bike course, the heat, not so much!! Thankfull to have the ability to work med tent after my race, LOTS of IV's, lots of puking (luckily NOT on me!) stitches once yesterday, and once today. Fortunately, none of those were for me!!
Most frequent commments heard "I've never raced this slow before, Ive never walked a run before, and Man was that HARD, and its sooo HOT". I second all of them!!

Before my wave started I did see one lady short cut the course at the downhill where transition is (after you come off of the bridge and make that right).  The people around me and I were like ...... "Did she just do that???"  Lopped off 4 miles of the course pretty quickly.  Cheating b-tch .........

Just not my day for some reason.  Gals to see you held up and made it through and even had a faster 2nd run for pace even with the hill walks!

Wooot! Great race there lady! Way to overcome the heat, lack of pre race day food, and tummy cramps. I get some odd crampy things in my abs which I believe are from adhesions too.

You did the donks proud!

Great job, Pam!  Finishing in the heat yesterday was an accomplishment.  Dropped chains during a race are never fun, either.  I like your attitude about it though.

I get a cramp in my abs near my appy scar and I've been told it's adhesions, too.  Not fun!!

Thanks again for your help in the med tent!  I really appreciate it!!

It was nice to meet you on Saturday, although i wasn't in a cordial mood.  Thank You for your help in the Med Tent, it meant a lot to have you come up and introduce yourself.

Nice job on making it through your race in those conditions, cramp and mechanical.  Great write up.  Best Of Luck in your next races.

Good job hanging tough.  Awesome Attitude, too.  You definitely gave more than you recieved (not just in your race, but for other racers, too)...and that is a good thing.

I don't think the Du-Nationals have seen the last of Pam Jones
