Set Up Events
Total Time = 2h 42m 17s
Overall Rank = /
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 17/
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 04:30, ate a small bowl of cereal, and drove 1.5 hours to the race site.
Event warmup:

Ran 20 minutes, swam about 200 yards.
Swim
  • 34m 1s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 04s / 100 yards
Comments:

This start was a running beach start. I got banged around pretty good at the start and felt like I was fighting for a spot to swim. Their were two green buoys (seperated by a couple hundred meters) that we had to go around and keep on our left shoulder. Like an idiot I spotted on the wrong buoy. I was swimming straight, just straight wrong! On one of my breaths I heard a whistle and a guy yelling. I looked up and sadly he was yelling at me to go back to the correct buoy! After I got back on course the rest of the swim was uneventful. My stupid mistake probably cost me a few extra minutes in the water.
What would you do differently?:

Swim the course!
Transition 1
  • 02m 45s
Comments:

2:45 seems like a long freaking time in transition, however, it was a long bare foot run to the transition area after you crossed the swim timing mat. I was actually had like the third fastest transition for my age group.
What would you do differently?:

Collect my third place T1 award and go home.
Bike
  • 1h 11m 38s
  • 24 miles
  • 20.10 mile/hr
Comments:

It wasn't my best effort on the bike, but overall I felt decent coming off the bike. Looking back at my race I don't think I took in enough fluids on the bike.
Transition 2
  • 01m 11s
Comments:

No mishaps. Racked bike put on my race belt, my shoes, and started running.
Run
  • 53m 14s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 34s  min/mile
Comments:

The first three miles of the run was completed in a little under 24 minutes. Shortly after I made the turnaround I got a cramp in my right quad. I stopped to rub it out, and never felt like I could get things going again. I stopped once more to rub my leg and stretch out cramps.
What would you do differently?:

I should have took in more calories, fluids, and electrolyte replacement on the bike.
Post race
Warm down:

Sat on my butt, drank a coke, and drank some water.

Event comments:

Like my friend Dan has said in the past, "I would like to make up a better overall finishing time, but what difference would that make?" It is what it is. I'm doing a sprint race at Lake Murray next weekend. Hopefully I will be able to site better, and remember to take more fluids on the bike.
