Just throwing it out there....I was having a conversation earlier while swimming...has anyone ever used a full Ironman plan to train for just a half....is there that much of an advantage of over training the mileage needed....this is of course if your body is use to and can handle that type of workouts.

If you can handle the added distance/volume wthout injury or illness and have the time to train, I can not see how it would do anything but make you faster.

Instead of training for the longer distance, use that 'wasted' time for speed work. Get faster, not longer (unless that is your goal).

Most of the people on this site would do well to forget that such a thing as speed work even exists.

I've always maintained that people should train for a 10K the way most train for a marathon. I see no problem training for a HIM with an IM plan if you can handle the volume.

I followed Don Fink's 30 week plan up until week 20-something where he has you do a half (in preparation for the full) last year - I just didn't do the full.  I followed it again this Spring, but moved from the Just Finish plan to the Competitve / Intermediate plan for a HIM in 2 weeks.

I did it because I wanted my body to adjust to the volume of training and to build a base -- plus it was the easiest plan for me to follow.  Knowing I can handle the volume is a big confidence builder going into the Fall for my prep for IMFL.  I will use his plan again for that!
