Subject: I'm visiting the Columbus/Newark area....

Hi!

I'll be in the Columbus/Newark area in a few weeks for work.  Can you give me tips on any great parks for riding and/or lakes for OWS near there?

Thanks!

I have not been riding that long so I have not been on a lot of the trails in Columbus, but one I like is the southern portion of the Alum Creek Trail on this website.  I think it is about 22miles out and back.

I believe the city of Westerville also has some nice trails, although I have not ridden on any of them.  The link below is a map of their trails.

I'm not familiar with Newark at all so I can't help there.

There are also supposed to be some great bike trails in Newark.  I've only seen them from the road and have heard great things about them so I can't give you exacts on where to get on them etc

But I imagine anyone around Newark can tell you where to pick up the trail.

newbz should be able to help you... He went to college at Denison which is right next door in Granville.

The area is pretty open. You get out of city limits and you are in corn fields and hills which is nice. Plus the way the roads are laid out it is pretty easy to design a loop.

OWS... South on 79/Hebron to Buckeye Lake is an option... So is Alum Creek but it is closer to Columbus than Newark and would be a bit of a drive.

Hello,
The Newark to Johns Town Bike path is pretty good, it is right off Cherry Bottom Rd.. The open roads past Denison are good but traffic is pretty wild so watch that. Buckeye Lake is no good for swimming, other than that the quarry around 5th Av. in Columbus is good but don't know if anybody is in the water yet?? Have fun and be safe!

Oh hay, I live in Newark. I've lived all over the country, Texas, California, etc. and this place HANDS DOWN has the best biking of anywhere I've ever lived. Start out at the OSU/COTC branch and from there you can ride all the way to Johnstown if you wish (~20 miles one way). Lots of good scenery and once you get out of the city, it's almost all flat. I ride these trails just about every day.

The only problem is "same-wayers" as I call them. People who are walking the same direction as you, usually two-by-two, so you have to slow down to squeeze past them. So if you want to time yourself, be prepared to have your time interferred with. But that kind of thing is inherent to bike trails anywhere, I imagine.

When and what is the distance?  Will you do the bike path or the road out to the basket?
