St. Anthony's Triathlon

Sunny
Total Time = 2h 58m 23s
Overall Rank = 3515/
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 156/162
Pre-race routine:

I get nervous. And when I get nervous, I can't eat or sleep. Not so good when you have to swim, bike and run for a few hours.

I met Cat and we headed over to the race. While walking I was concerned about the wind knowing what the waves must have looked like. Then we heard the news about the swim getting cancelled. I didn't believe it at first. I thought it was a cruel joke. But as people were walking with their helmets out of transition, I realized it was true. Then the rumors about the possible additional run...1 mile, 5K, 10K. I was not prepared for more running. I was happy to hear there was not another run added.

I eventually got down an uncrustable, 4 shot blocks and some gatorade while waiting.
Event warmup:

No warm up. I just waited til 9 to get going. I watched the pros dismount the bike. Very cool. Just like I do it...NOT.

Swim
Transition 1
  • 02m 11s
Comments:

I have not really tried to work on transitions. I ran in my flip flops then put on socks and biking shoes. I watched my row well and didn't get lost at least. The pink swim cap that someone stretched across the bars helped a lot too.
Bike
  • 1h 37m 57s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 15.22 mile/hr
Comments:

All I heard was "on your left!" I can't believe I am so slow. I also get bored out on the bike. I fiddled in my seat a lot. I couldn't get really comfortable. At least I didn't fall. That would have squashed my confidence. This was my longest outdoor bike to date.
What would you do differently?:

Learn to get faster. I need a better bike fit. Biking needs work.
Transition 2
  • 03m 15s
Comments:

I wasn't trying to go fast. I just got my shoes of and my kicks on. I reapplied sunblock. I really didn't want to burn. First few steps were so painful. My seat on the bike was very bad. I basically walked in transition to the run start.
What would you do differently?:

Just move faster. I wasn't really trying to go fast here, just clean.
Run
  • 1h 15m 1s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 12m 05s  min/mile
Comments:

My run was slow, but I was okay with it. I didn't break pace once for a walking break. Once I crossed the mat I just kept moving. It was very hot out there. There was a misting tent to run through in addition to the nice people spraying us down. I got gatorade t every station and water to pour over my head. I ate a Gu when I started and another about half way through. After the first 2 miles I found my legs and didn't hate the run. That's a huge improvement for me.
What would you do differently?:

Go faster
Post race
Warm down:

I got my cool towel (funny that they were the disposable OR towels), and met up with the BF. I got a massage in the tent which was great. I didn't really have an appetite, so I just drank water. I did grab a hot dog at a stand on the way back to the car. I went back to the hotel, mooched a shower in Cat's room, dismantled my bike and went to the airport. I slept the whole flight.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My slow ass body.

Event comments:

Missed swim was a real diappointment, as it was for many. I swam the day before and know I would have been okay. Having said that...it's not worth having someone die. Many people don't know their limits, or just would have gone since they paid for the race. I think the RD made the right call, as disappointing as it was. Overall it was a blast, mostly getting to meet some of my BT buddies.

Great job!!

It is tough to race in the hot south early in the season when we live up north and haven't even ridden outside in shorts yet.

You faced your fears head on and are stronger for it.

It is always hard and challenging to move up to new distance and race....I know your next Oly will be different and hopefully you will be able to swim.

Congrats!!!

Straight from the race to the airport? Rough. Great first race especially since that was your longest outdoor ride.
