Ask the Librarian when you get there.  Unless you have a huge regional library at your disposal, this conversation is useless if it's not available.   Or, let us know which library you're using and I'll look at the catalog (I'm a Librarian...)

If the library doesn't pan out, I often buy books at the airport.  Best deal available since they charge the cover price and not a huge mark-up.  They always carry easy to like bestsellers.

Um, pretty decent-sized library (Lafayette Public Library), not sure what qualifies one to be a "huge regional library," but I'll bet I can find at least a couple of the titles recommended.

I can access the catalog online, just not from work. The main branch is like six blocks from where I currently sit, no problem going there at lunch to look.

Not sure why you think cover price is the "Best deal available ." Does anyone charge over cover price? I know I rarely pay that...

Am surprised and pleased that we have at least three librarians in CoJ...

Any book that tells how to avoid catching an influenza virus in confined spaces... ... be careful and have a safe trip.

mmrocker13 - 2009-04-30 10:26 AM Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal (CHristopher Moore)

Smart, witty, captivating. A good read. (and no, you don't need to be religious)

x2... I LOVED this book, but someone that is super religious might not find it amusing.

"Angels and Demons" by Dan Brown.

Better than "DiVinci Code" (in my opinion) and perfect airplane/trip reading.  Current as it will be in theaters very shortly I believe.

Thanks for the recommendations, went with Chris Moore's You Suck  and it's prequel Bloodsucking Fiends. Should be enough to kill the layover time, plus I have all these other recs to check out when I get back.

How about something dark and captivating?

if I wouldn't read through the responses, we'd have doubled up on this - this is the perfect "light" read.

but beware - your life may never be the same after reading this...

Eh, decent enough read, but life changing? Not hardly, at least for me.

The Swarm by Frank Schatzing.

I thoroughly enjoyed it. Read it  and try not to think about the book the next time you're swimming in open water.

Here's the summary taken from Amazon:

Whales begin sinking ships. Toxic, eyeless crabs poison Long Island's water supply. The North Sea shelf collapses, killing thousands in Europe. Around the world, countries are beginning to feel the effects of the ocean's revenge as the seas and their inhabi-tants begin a violent revolution against mankind. In this riveting novel, full of twists, turns, and cliffhangers, a team of scientists discovers a strange, intelligent life force called the Yrr that takes form in marine animals, using them to wreak havoc on humanity for our ecological abuses. Soon a struggle between good and evil is in full swing, with both human and suboceanic forces battling for control of the waters. At stake is the survival of the Earth's fragile ecology -- and ultimately, the survival of the human race itself.

I know you already choose but if still looking for somethign I would go with The world Without Us by Alan Weisman. Fairly light reading, good information, and still lets you think.

You could also go with Last child in the woods by Richard Louv.

Heck if anyone has not read those I would recommend them.

Also someone posted it previously but Enders Game by Orson Scott Card is excellent though I would not really go for Empire myself, it was interesting just was to narrow in detail in the storyline for me.

REally? I actually had it recommended to me by a minister :D IT's not unflattering in any way--in fact, I found it to be quite touching, and it kind of made my old, bitter, atheist heart soften, just a bit :p

Anything by Ian Rankin - but specifically his Detective Rebus series (start at the beginning, read in order, there are 15 or so now).

I'm definitely too late for the layover recommendations, but I thought I'd throw out my all time favorite books to pass the time for anyone who needs future recommendations.

My favorite is Wilbur Smith's Courtney series- not current, but there are pirates! (So vaguely related to current events?) I've been known to miss my lightrail stop (or get on the wrong train) because these are such captivating books.  Pirates and scandalous love stories and incredible action, you just can't go wrong with that combo.  There are 13 books in the series, but once you get into it that won't be enough.  Birds of Prey is where the series chronologically starts- and that's where the pirates start too.

I'm way late on the recommendation thing too.  But this is too good of a topic to let die.

For fun, quick reading, I love McCarthy's Bar by Pete McCarthy.  It's about his trip to Ireland and the mischief he gets in to during his travels.

I also found Fanglang by John Marks to be a pretty nice vampie story.  It's no Dracula, but it's good.

Another funny quick read is Too Fat to Fish, by Artie Lange.

And I try not to go anywhere without a Dark Tower book by Stephen King, or one of his short story collections.
